Is this the 1901 census entry?

The mmn of children on this and previous years is Dunn and this seems to be her marriage and baptism.

I did the same  searches as Comberton and came to the same conclusion.

Can you tell us where the Bains surname you mention comes from? If its a Mary Bains you are looking for and believe she married a John Hughes, then search the GRO births for Surname Hughes, MMN Bains and then try census returns for any possible children you find.

EDIT the GRO site which gives mother's maiden names prior to 1911 is here
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/indexes_search.asp

The GRO site not the best to search, only 2 years either side of any year and male/female need separate searches for the each time frame, but it may well give the clues you need

Boo

I agree with both of you.  I was working on the information given by OP as I had presumed their research was correct

p.s perhaps the birthplace given in the census is wrong as they are living in Back Chapel St, Batley, Yorkshire in the 1881 census. John Hughes gives is age as 47 and birthplace wrexham north wales. thanks. brian
