Thank you both for all your digging, I have to admit I am struggling to get my head around this but it does sound like there is potential for there to be a connection.

I bought the 1901 census record for Alex Barr and Isabella Martin Barr and children from SP and 1911 Census Record for Bella Martin Barr with Son William and Alexander aged 10.

Sarah Barr, their mother, made an application for relief 30th March 1909, after her husband deserted.

William 19 Years- Birth of WILLIAM BARR in July 1890 Dromore, Co Down
Lizzie 15 Years – Birth 1892 Kilwinning, Ayrshire mmn Martin?
Sarah 7 Years – Birth 1902 Ardrossan New mmn Martin.
James 3 Years – Birth 1905 Dalry (Ayr) mmn Martin.

Without a first name or location this may be difficult to find.

A further application for relief was made 5th April 1909  On this application it gives their residence as C/O Mrs McColm-so assuming it's a Mrs McColm who is looking after the young children. On this application it's for Sarah junior and her brother James.

The last record I have is from 14th October 1911, an application made by the father Samuel Barr for relief for Sarah and James.

Thank you for your PM, have you seen any of the following?

1901 Census Ardrossan New, on SP – Barr family
SAMUEL 36, SARAH 35, WILLIAM 11, ELIZABETH 7.

1911 Cunninghame Poor House. Irvine.
JAMES BARR, age 5 & SARAH BARR, age 7

The 1911 census in Scotland was taken on April 2, 1911
1911 but age needs to be checked on original census.

SAMUEL BARR 1911Ardrossan New. 57  Born 1854
No other Barr’s present. (No further trace of Samuel)

Possible Williams, no other Barr’s present but he may be elsewhere.
WILLIAM BARR 1911 21 595/ 9/ 35 Irvine Ayr

10 possible deaths in Ayrshire for a William Barr 1890 +/- 2 years

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

Colin

Hi Colin,

I have a copy of the 1901 census for the Barr family showing Samuel, Sarah, William and Elizabeth living at 9 Winton Buildings Ardrossan. Samuel is an Iron Ore Labourer at Docks.

Interestingly on the same page of the 1901 census for the Barr family, Sarah Barr nee Martin's sister Jane McLelland nee Martin is living in the same building with her own family.

I have also found William and Elizabeth on the 1911 census living with a William and Elizabeth McCombe (Could be McColm from the poor house records) at 15 Townhead Street, Stevenston. William is a Labourer and Elizabeth a Dynamite Worker.

I have the 1911 census for the cunninhame poor house showing James and Sarah as inmates there.

I also have Samuel Barr on the 1911 census aged 59 boarding 4 Montgomery Lane, New, Ardrossan, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Samuel died at the poor house hospital Inverkip in Greenock 13 December 1938.

William Barr married Susan Edgar 29 December 1911 in Ardrossan, They went on to have the following children that I've managed to find

William and Susan are living with Susan's father John Edgar in 1921 in Saltcoats.

John Edgar Barr 1912-1984
William Barr 1913-1981
Sarah Martin Barr 1915-1915
James Edgar Barr 1917-1977
Margaret Ringland Barr 1918-?
Alexander Barr - 1924-1928
Fred Martin Barr- 1930-1976

William Died 1959

Elizabeth Barr married Andrew Irvine 03/12/1930 Stevenston

They had one child as far as I know also called Andrew Irvine 1933-1977

Elizabeth died 23 May 1966

Do you think Isabella Martin could be the sister of Sarah Martin and Jane Martin?

Elizabeth a Dynamite Worker, would almost certainly have worked at Ardeer in Stevenston.

Ardeer, Scotland: The Nobel Dynamite Factory. KA20 3LN - The Nobel Dynamite factory made explosive and propellants to be used in WW1. Maritime historian Eric Graham tells the story of Alfred Nobel's dynamite factory on the Ardeer Peninsula in North Ayrshire.
The factory closed in the 1990's after having been taken over and operated by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in 1926.
