Seeking Moan/Mohan Family Details - Drumilly
« on: Sunday 22 December 24 19:14 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon and happy holidays,

I live in the United States and my immigrant ancestor was Michael Mohan of "Drumilly, Parish of Loughgilly, Co. of Armagh". He was born in 1866 and emigrated to the United States in the late 1880's, after completing an indentured servitude contract with John Carlisle of Corromannon (between 1883-1886).

Based on some research on the commercial websites, it appears that Michael Mohan's parents were James Moan (1832-1887) and Biddy Murray (1832-1915). The commercial sites recommend that James Moan's parents are Patrick Moan (1798-?) and Catharine Kelly, of Derrynoose. The recommendation does not come with much evidence.

I was wondering if there have been any recent updates or disclosures that could assist with my research? In 2018, a relative of mine visited a former property of our family on Fort Road in Drumilly, based on what I believe were Griffiths records.

Thanks, all.

First of all welcome and may your searches be fruitful.  Remember there is not such thing as a silly question and that we are here to help.

Just for the info of the OP there are several more spellings for this surname that I have come across

Moughan
Maughan
Moohan
Moon

it is good practice to keep a record of these spelings and search for all of them on every database you come across.  While some will throw up alternative spelings some that i have come across don't like wild cards and search only for the name as spelt in the search.

These are good places to search

irish genealogy

Family Search

https://www.familysearch.org/en/home/portal/

I often use the records on the National Census mainly 1901/1911 to search for names in the area and then sort by age.  Often for emigrants you can pick up the names of siblings and sometimes parents.  Once you have these you can then search laterally.

Griffiths Valuation

I am curious about the indentured servitude.

There is this 1901 record of a John Carlisle of Carrowmannon.

https://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Armagh/Balleek/Carrowmannon/1035021/

In this record he is a Blacksmith.  Are you sure he was employed under servitude rather than an indenture for an apprenticeship?  Sometimes parents/guardians placed children as apprentices paying money to the master.
Here is alink to apprenticeship records a little earlier in ireland

You haven’t said what religious denomination he was.

I can see a Michael to James Moan and Bridget O’Hagan 13 Sept 1866 in Loughgilly RC parish, no address.

So was your man COI?
What was his father’s name and occupation on his marriage?

Edit
Sorry just noticed I put the wrong link in.

This birth is the one I see attached to family trees, but the mother is HAGAN/O'HAGAN not MURRAY.  This Michael had a twin named Patrick.

A James Moan was baptized in the parish of Derrynoose, on 3/6/1826 [NOT 1832].
Parents Pat Moan and Kitty Kelly.

However, I  don'r see the basis for this being the correct James - there are multiple baptisms of different children of this name in the appropriate timeframe.
