Chesterton Road, Cambridge - Which parish?
« on: Sunday 16 October 05 15:36 BST (UK) »
Please can you tell me which parish 145 Chesterton Road is under in Cambridge? I would like to look up that address on the 1891 census.

Thanks

Jane,
I would say that that would possibly come under St Andrew's Chesterton, though I'm not 100% sure.  Will have a look elsewhere to confirm it...

Jane, I'm sure you've already done this, but if you Google in just 145, Chesterton Rd., you get a photo of the facade of the house, and it says on the same page that it was built in 1885.  It's close to a dreadful one-way system called "Mitcham's Corner", and quite close by a pub called The Portland Arms...

I never thought to google the address. I am amazed. My greatgrandfather was living there in 1897 just before he got married in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. I still haven't worked out why he was in Cambridge.

Jane,
Wasn't 1897 the year of all those Diamond Jubilee celebration parties for Victoria?  There was a huge sit down meal on a large piece of open land in Cambridge called Parker's Piece in 1838 (involving tens of thousands of people) to celebrate her recent coronation - maybe they had a huge party there in 1897 too; and perhaps your gt-grandfather attended...
It's always lovely to imagine one's own ancestors eavesdropping or participating in momentous events or celebrations, isn't it...?

I used to live at 188, which was in the parish of St. Andrew (the Church was pretty much right behind the house).

With St. Giles' much further West down Chesterton Road (which becomes Chesterton Lane), i'd guess that the nearest church would be St. Andrew.
