World War Two / Medals of Dutch sailors who lived in England, were they awarded them?
« on: Friday 07 December 18 12:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have been trying to find out about my Grandfathers Military service in the second world war.

Gerhadus Hendrikus Kempen was born in the Netherlands but came to England with his parents in 1912 at the age of 8 years, he answered the Netherlands call to arms during the war and joined the Royal Netherlands Navy.
It seems from the information I have that he served on the MV Gadila, this was a converted oil tanker and was turned into a merchant aircraft carrier (MAC Ship) and he was based at the Royal Naval Air Station Maydown, Londonderry, Northern Ireland.

The proof is there that he served and I am wondering if he would have been awarded a medal such as the Defence and War Medal, no one in the family believes he was awarded one

My question is, would he have been awarded them, or would he possibly have been awarded a Netherlands medal if indeed one existed, I would like to purchase copies if he was eligible.

Many thanks in anticipation of your kind replies and as always my very best regards.

Frank.

World War One / Long shot with a poor photograph.
« on: Friday 09 November 18 16:03 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, could anyone hazard a guess as to the Regiment?
The man is believed to be George Robert Elliott (possibly later dropped the George) he was born in Brigg Lincolnshire in early November 1905 and was baptised at Brigg on the 14th of that month, parents were Joseph and Eliza.

Family belief is that he was in the cavalry and died possibly in India in the 1920's, does anyone think he's cavalry, sorry the photograph is poor but that's all I have.

Many thanks and best regards always.

World War One / Can anyone answer a quick military question.
« on: Friday 26 October 18 20:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am at present looking into the life of a lad on my local war memorial who died 100 years ago today, I have birth, parents, wife etc and his census results.

His name was Herbert Sutton, 266621 Driver, Royal Horse Artillery, born 1886 in Thorne Yorkshire, his service records don't look to have survived and I cannot find a Medal Index Card on Ancestry, I have Burial, register of effects etc, however he is shown on the "UK, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914-1919" as Formerly "38460, Pte., 3Rd Res. Cav", could anyone shed any light on what regiment etc this was.

Many thanks in advance and my very best regards always.

World War One / Could I ask about this uniform please.
« on: Thursday 18 October 18 20:52 BST (UK)  »
Good evening, I have been asked to help a friend regarding a family photograph she has received, the gentleman could be her Grandfather but she is not sure.

Joseph Elliot(t) was born in Brigg in Lincolnshire in 1878 and later moved to Thorne in Yorkshire, he served in the first world war in the Lincolnshire regiment , 1st/5th Battalion, Reg number 3188.

He was the son of Joseph and Alice Elliott of Brigg and later married Eliza and lived in Thorne.

Do you think the man in the photograph could be the man described, any help or input will as always be greatfully received. Belief is that he also served in the Boer war, he does look to be wearing the Queens South Africa Medal?

Hi, I suspect that this is a bit of a lost cause  :-\

Here is the page from my Grandfathers Netherlands navy pay book, it is a copy of a copy of a copy of a ......... I'm sure you get the picture  :-[

Would it be at all possible to perhaps enhance it so I could make out the numbers on it, I know his date of birth is 7-01-04 but I would love to know his official number etc or anything else which may be able to be made clear, I have a friend in the Netherlands who may be able to search for records of my Grandfathers time in the Second World War, but as can be seen from the photograph the details are somewhat blurred.

Many thanks in anticipation of any help and as always my very very best regards.

Canada / Thomas Arthur Glasier, 2147319 Fort Garry Horse. His time in Canada.
« on: Saturday 28 July 18 23:23 BST (UK)  »
Hi  :) I am looking for a little help, if it is at all possible.

Thomas Arthur Glaiser / Glasier, was born in Thorne, Yorkshire, to Arthur Samuel Glasier and Emily Mary Johnson in 1888, he seems to have emigrated to Canada sometime between 1901 and 1911 (I cannot find him anywhere in 1911), he served with the  Fort Garry Horse (a Canadian Cavalry Regiment) and died on the 12th of August 1918 at a casualty clearing station and is remembered at the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial Cemetery.

Is it possible for anyone to find any information about his time in the cavalry / arrival in Canada, etc, (I only hold a UK and Ireland ancestry subscription  :( ), any help or information would be gratefully received.

By very best regards and thanks as always for taking the time to read my post.

World War Two / Sottish soldier WWII records.
« on: Wednesday 02 May 18 14:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I just know this is going to be one of those rapid response answers  ;D

However, could I ask, would the service records of a Scottish person who served in the second world war be held by the M.O.D, or would they in fact be available from the National Records of Scotland, I am just enquiring for a friend who would like to get his late Grandfathers service record.

Many thanks.

Canada Lookup Request / Another cheeky request regarding Romeo Guy Labrosse.
« on: Wednesday 21 February 18 21:33 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, after my previous request was wonderfully solved thanks to DonM, see here;

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=788167.msg6436496#msg6436496

I wondered if anyone could find Romeo Guy Labrosse's marriage, I have very little to go on apart from the fact that his spouse had the christian name of Sophie Stella, she passed away as far as I can see in August 2004, I assume that they married in Canada as she is down on his service record.

Many thanks as always in anticipation of any replies, and as always my very best regards.
