London and Middlesex / Isleworth family of aliases: VIVEN / VIVIAN / WIFFEN / WIFFIN
« on: Sunday 14 February 16 07:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all

It has been a battle trying to trace my G-G-G-Grandfather, James Peter VIVIAN. However, thanks to the worthy assistance of other RootsChatters, I am convinced he is the convict Peter WIFFIN alias VIVIAN from Middlesex, transported to Australia in 1836. I am led to believe that he was christened as Peter VIVEN on Christmas Day, 1805, at Isleworth in Middlesex, the son of Peter & Martha VIVEN. These links have all been made (not by me, I'm not that smart or well resourced) on the basis of the family's obscure trade of Calico Printing.

It would appear from convict records that at the time of his conviction, he was married with a child. However I have no further details about that.

I would greatly appreciate any further info on this family. WIFFIN is sometimes WIFFEN in the old Australian records.

Cheers

Wiltshire / CASSIDY family in Ramsbury
« on: Saturday 13 February 16 12:28 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all.

My 3xgreat-grandfather was John Lewis CASSIDY, born 1824 in Ramsbury, Wiltshire. His father was an Irishman, Richard Edward CASSIDY, and his mother was Catherine FOWLER, of Ramsbury. They married in 1819. Richard died in 1827, Catherine lived til 1881. John married Jane Elizabeth DEACON, and they emigrated to South Australia.

I am hoping for some help with these enquiies:

Is there any info on any siblings for John? One chart on Rootsweb shows two brothers, William and Joseph, without any further info.

Were they Catholic or Protestant? And is there any clue as to where in Ireland Richard came from?

Ireland / Richard Edward CASSIDY
« on: Saturday 13 February 16 12:09 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

It appears I may have Irish ancestry ;D

My 3xgreat grandfather John Lewis CASSIDY was born 11/7/1824 in Ramsbury, Wiltshire, and later emigrated to South Australia. I always thought Cassidy was an Irish surname, and thought it unusual for an Englishman. Turns out his father is one Richard Edward CASSIDY (on some trees just Edward CASSIDY) who was born about 1795 in Ireland. He had emigrated to England by 1819, and died 1827, so is not on any census.

Can any one help with any information on him? I am particularly interested in his birthdate and location.

Thanks

Travelling People / Do I have Kentish Gypsy ancestry?
« on: Tuesday 14 April 15 13:10 BST (UK)  »
Hi all.

My mother's, mother's, mother's, mother's, mother's, mother was a lady by the name of Silvestra FLOATE, daughter of Thomas Noakes FLOATE & Martha CHITTENDEN. Often in records mistakenly entered as Sylvester, I looked the name up, and found it to be a Gypsy name meaning "born of the woods". So, knowing nothing of Gypsies, I found many references to the book 'My Ancestors were Gypsies" by Sharon FLOATE. She having that same surname, got me curious, but do you think I can find a copy anywhere?

The FLOATE family migrated from Ashford, Kent to South Australia in the late 1830's. I noticed too references to Kent being home to a significant Gypsy population back in the early 19th century.

Am I reading too much into this? I could be adding 2 + 2 and getting a pineapple. Or could I have Gypsy ancestry?

Australia / Help with WALLIS family of SA?
« on: Tuesday 14 April 15 12:17 BST (UK)  »
Hi all, my gt-gt-gt-grandmother was Mary Ann WALLIS, daughter of Thomas WALLIS (sometimes WALLACE). She married James Peter VIVIAN in 1848 at Adelaide's Holy Trinity Church, and the family resided variously at Mt Beevor, Tungkillo, Mannum and Mount Pleasant.

In early Adelaide there were at least two Thomas WALLIS's with families, it is possible that my tree has the wrong one, as it shows her siblings as two boys and one girl. The article below says otherwise:

The Advertiser Monday 14 December 1903 Page 5
Mrs. M. A. Vivian, of Mount Pleasant, writes to us as follows:-"I am an old pioneer, having left Blackwall sometime in September, 1837, for Gravesend, where we stayed for three days. We then sailed for this State, touching nowhere till we got to Kangaroo Island, where we dropped anchor for a few days, and then came on to Holdfast Bay, where we landed on December 2, 1837, now 66 years ago. I am the only remaining member of a family of six. My father and mother died years ago, and my brother 16 years since in Melbourne. My two sisters (Mrs. Winch, aged 71, and Mrs. Harrison, aged 75), died in 1901, one on November 1, and the other on November 13. I reached my 75th birthday on November 23 last......I was nine years of age when we landed. We came in the Navarino...... "

can anyone help identify the members of Mary Ann's family?  :)

(to complicate matters, Trove searches reveal that there are clearly two separate Mary Ann VIVIANs in South Oz in the 19th century)

Hi all

Australia / Help with two outstanding SA immigrants?
« on: Saturday 11 April 15 08:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

My ancestors all arrived in South Australia in the 19th century, aboard 26 ships across the colony's first half century. I have the details of 24 of those. The two ships I don't know are those two which carried the last of my colonial immigrants. They are:

William BOWYER of Gloucestershire, arrived late 1870's, in his early 20's.

Eliza DAVEY of Cornwall, arrived late 1880's, in her early 20's.

I will post more info on each shortly.

Thanks for any assistance you can give  :)

Dorset / BCM for Emma SOPER
« on: Friday 03 April 15 04:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Looking for a birth/ christening for Emma SOPER around 1835, in or around Tarrant Crawford. I believe her father was a Benjamin SOPER.

She married Henry PIKE about May 1860 at Wimborne. A firm date for that wedding would be delightful.

There daughter Emma Louise (my gt-grandmother) was born at Poole in 1872, and the family migrated to South Australia in 1878.

Thanks
