The Common Room / Prisoners
« on: Sunday 20 June 10 23:23 BST (UK)  »
Would people in prison when the 1881 census was taken be listed on that census?
Would a 12/13 year old be dealt with in a Quarter Sessions in 1865 and could someone as young as that be sentenced to 5 months in prison for larceny.
Thanks.

The Common Room / Aliases
« on: Tuesday 15 June 10 11:04 BST (UK)  »
Recently come across two of my forebears who used an alias. One is listed in court papers as having an alias and both names are given (this is in 1882).
The names are Joseph Hudson, alias John Edgerton. Which of these two is the likeliest one he had as a birth name?
Was a change of name in the 1880's done officially or did the person just take on another name?
Thanks.

« on: Saturday 15 May 10 22:35 BST (UK)  »
George Bohill played football for Bedlington in 1912.
I have his birthplace as North Delaval.
Is there a district called North Delaval in Northumberland?
The nearest birth registrations I have are George Bohill b.Newcastle S1889
and George Bohills b.Tynemouth D1890.
Thanks

Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / Dorrington of Whittlesey
« on: Saturday 15 May 10 13:57 BST (UK)  »
John Dorrington was born in Whittlesea according to the census of 1891 (Grantham) and 1901 (Sheffield)
He was born about 1853 (+/- 3 years)
He died in Sheffield in 1910, age given as 58.

Unable to find any reference to his birth or his first marriage.(Only know he was married twice as he is listed as a widower on his second mariage certificate)
Not found him on the censuses of 1861/71/81.

He named his two eldest daughters Vida and Andalusia (born 1889, 1891)  - unusual names - wsas there a connection between Whittlesey and Spain in the 1860/70's

Thanks.
