The Lighter Side / This looked a bit harsh
« on: Friday 22 September 06 19:45 BST (UK)  »
I was looking for some info on a John Bryant in the Strand in the early 19th century when I found this in the Old Baily proceedings

http://www.oldbaileyonline.org/html_units/1820s/t18260511-114.html

a bit harsh I thought, 14 years transportation, but then maybe we're just far too soft today  :)

He didn't turn out to be mine

The Common Room / How Old is this Lady
« on: Thursday 21 September 06 19:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi

Would anyone like to hazzard a guess at the age of this lady. I really haven't a clue. I've taken it from a family wedding in 1923.

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / 1851/1861 Census Lookup Clerkenwell
« on: Tuesday 19 September 06 18:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Could someone lookup James Carter in Clerkenwell, born about 1814. Should be with wife Mary Ann. Should have daughter Mary or Mary ann and possibly Eliza.

I think James may have died sometime before 1861. Mary Ann daughter married in Shoreditch in 1859, so Mary Ann the older may be there as well in 1861.

Thanks

Hi

Could someone please look up Henry Summers in the 1871 census please possible wife Elizabeth. He was born about 1845 and could be in Hoxton/Shoreditch. I'm trying to find a match for a Henry Summers who in 1881 was living in Francis Street Hoxton with probably his second wife.

Armed Forces / What Unit RAMC
« on: Sunday 06 August 06 23:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

Can anyone interperet what unit is shown on the following. It appears on an identity certificate that my grandfather had when demobilised at the end of WW1. As can be seen he was in the RAMC.

The Common Room / Are these the same person
« on: Saturday 05 August 06 12:53 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I have 2 photographs in which I believe I have the same person. They are probably about 15 years apart. I was wondering if some kind people would like to give their opinion as to whether the chap sitting on the left in both photos is one and the same. This is the first time I've attached photos so lets hope it works.

There is some family connection between the two pictures, as the more elderly gentleman (my great grandfather) sitting on the right in the second picture (if I've managed to attach them correctly) was married to one of the sisters of the two young men in the first picture.

Occupation Interests / Registrar, relieving & vaccination Officer
« on: Thursday 25 May 06 14:32 BST (UK)  »
Whilst looking through the historical directories I discovered that in the 1890s my great granddad was a Registrar of births and deaths (good man :) ), a school Attendance Officer and a Relieving & Vaccination Officer.

Now I obviously know what the registrar’s job was (helping us I think :) ), and I guess a school attendance officer was some sort of truancy police. But does anyone know what a Relieving & Vaccination Officer did? And would all of these responsibilities amount to a full time paid job or something extra to the day job?
