The Common Room / Probate Registry site's response to my feedback
« on: Monday 14 March 22 18:32 GMT (UK)  »
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=858522.0

I have posted this as a new topic as it deals more with their response to feedback.  I'll refrain from comment - particularly the last part - but have drafted a reply which I am still working on

Me to them

You need to check your programming etc following my experience detailed below.  Totally haywire
Looking for a  1965 will for Hugh Owen Roberts.    Input surname etc & am presented with 48 pages of results - but not all for Roberts

Robertshaw/Robertson then a page of Roberts & back to Robertson.  Finally get into Roberts and after 2 pages ending with Florence Roberts I get returned to the beginning.

Their response

Due to the way that the calendars are scanned, the search feature is based on indexing.
In a lot of cases, an uncommon surname will be sandwiched in amongst more common names.

Unfortunately on some occasions, you might have to navigate through a calendar with a close alphabetical range to find your desired match.

Something to note, as long as you have the correct FULL NAME, DOD, PROBATE DATE, REGISTRY,  you can actually type anything to those fields and we'll find it.
For Example: If you typed BROWN and view the calendar for Brown, but entered the details for John Smith and those details were accurate, we would be able to locate it.

Please note - this person is in no way connected to the William Edward Murdoch - officer on the Titanic

I am helping a friend with her FH and have hit a proverbial brick wall with her paternal Grandfather. I have all other info apart from his death

William Edward was born as Murdoch but the surname can vary.  Parents were Isaac & Isabella nee McAllister.   William was a mariner & married Elizabeth Crogent in 1892.  He appears on the 1901 census but not the 1911

My friends father was their last child born 1909.  In 1911 Elizabeth is shown as married and I have her on the Liverpool ER's until her death in February 1939 but William does not appear.

Several of Elizabeth Crogent's siblings emigrated to the USA & died there and I wondered if William ended up in the USA & died there

I have looked on Ancestry & FS but cannot find anything that fits his profile

Devon Lookup Requests / Newspaper report of fatal accident in Plymouth June 2017
« on: Monday 11 October 21 16:57 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for any newspaper report about the following death if anybody can help.  I have Googled until I am crosseyed but cannot find anything online.  (His christian name has 2 x r’s but have tried searching with one as well)

My friends brother Garry Pentelow died on 13.6.2017 in Derriford Hospital although he lived in Cornwall. He was 78yrs old at the time.  Inquest was held 22.1.2018 in Plymouth

Cause of death is shown as Traumatic brain injury - Road traffic collision.  COPD is also shown but the Coroner concluded the RTA was the cause of his death.  As his death & the inquest were both in Plymouth I am assuming that’s where the accident happened.

My friend had been estranged from her brother for many years.  She only learnt of his death a few weeks ago but was unaware of the circumstances until I received his death cert today.

The Common Room / Changes to Family Search website

Have they changed the FS website as it bears no resemblance to what I was using a few days ago.

To say I’m not impressed would be an understatement

The Common Room / Registering an illegitimate birth
« on: Wednesday 09 June 21 11:25 BST (UK)  »
My cousin has just discovered via DNA that she had a half brother born 1936 died 2017.  She was b 1948

His mother was married & although his birth was registered under her married name it is said that my uncles name is shown as his father on the birth cert.

If that is true - would I be right in saying that my uncle would have had to be present at the birth registration & therefore had full knowledge of the child's birth?

A copy of the birth cert is being forwarded to my cousin.  The child was raised by the woman's husband who knew he was not the child's father

Surrey Lookup Requests / Where is Amelia Whitehead nee Pedgrift after 1851
« on: Friday 18 December 20 22:31 GMT (UK)  »
Joseph Whitehead b Wandsworth 1815 & Amelia Pedgrift baptised 20.1.1822  Norfolk married 1841 Surrey

The couple are found in 1851 - no children. HO107/1568/124/5.  Amelia’s birthplace Norwich

1861 Joseph is shown as married but no Amelia & no children.  RG9/339/79/28

1871/1881 - Joseph is now with Elizabeth Whitcombe & has 3 children by her - no marriage.  Elizabeth dies 1883 & Joseph 1899.  Elizabeth was single in 1861 so if Joseph was a widower there wasn’t anything to stop them marrying.  Their children were all registered as Whitehead.

There is an 1853 death in Marylebone but that Amelia is 50 per GRO online.  Her burial record shows her as 51 which is clearly written and has an address in Marylebone.  However - I would be happier if I could find a matching 1851 entry for her to rule her out as being Amelia b 1822.

Can anybody find Amelia Whitehead b 1802 on the 1851 census in the ?? Marylebone area?

Can anybody find Amelia Whitehead nee Pedgrift b 1822 Norfolk after 1851?

The Stay Safe Board / Not wearing a face mask
« on: Friday 14 August 20 22:44 BST (UK)  »
I was quite shocked today in Aldi - St Annes (Fylde)  branch.  In the first 2 aisles I counted 8 people without masks - mainly in the 20/30 age group.

2 were couples, a group of 3 young lads and a youth on his own.  I accept some people have hidden disabilities but 8 on the same day in what is quite a small branch of Aldi???

Anybody having problems with FS?

I log in - select to stay logged in for 2 weeks - but if I leave the site even for an hour or so I have to log in again

This is only happening on my iPad - not my desk top PC - and is a recent thing as I have never had a problem before

The Stay Safe Board / General discussion on current situation
« on: Sunday 10 May 20 01:54 BST (UK)  »
I heard that Blackpool was heaving today so I dread to think what's going to happen if any restrictions are eased.  The death toll is still far too high for my liking and with the 10-14 day incubation period for this virus I think another 2 weeks of restrictions would not be that unreasonable.

My neighbour was in shock on Thursday.  He is an engineer and his workplace have been staggering shifts to ensure distancing.  A colleague was sent home sick last Saturday, he was on a ventilator by Monday and died Wednesday.  Confirmed Coronavirus as cause of death
