United States of America / German born US citizen living in UK during WWI
« on: Friday 07 October 22 11:32 BST (UK)  »
I have asked this question elsewhere on Rootschat

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=865807.msg7361230#msg7361230

with conflicting replies I thought I would try from the American angle.

By August 1918 the US were drafting males, aged 45 and under, into the US military.  What would the position of a German born, US citizen living in England have been?

Germans living in England were often interned as they were considered a threat.

The chap I am interested in would have been 45 years old.   Would he have been drafted?  Did they bother about US citizens living abroad.  Are there any records that would help?

The Medieval Londoners Database (MLD) records the activities of London residents between c. 1100 and 1520, and is searchable by name, gender, citizenship status, location (ward, parish, and street if available), craft, occupation, civic office, and craft office, among other variables.

World War One / American in England during WWI
« on: Saturday 10 September 22 16:46 BST (UK)  »
Would a German born, American citizen, living in England have been drafted into the American army in WWI?

Looking at the Selective Service Act from Wikipedia, all males aged 21 to 30 were required to register to potentially be selected for military service. At the request of the War Department, Congress amended the law in August 1918 to expand the age range to include all men 18 to 45, and to bar further volunteering.

The man I am interested in would have become eligible for being drafted in 1918.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Peter DUNTON puzzle
« on: Friday 13 May 22 15:47 BST (UK)  »
Peter Dunton has me stumped.

His date of birth has consistently been given as 24th March 1910.

I can see no birth registration or baptism for him.  I cannot see a likely candidate on the 1911 census.

The earliest mention I can find for Peter are 2 school admission records:
On 1 March 1915 he joined Lancaster Road School and left 7 May 1915
8 April 1918 joined Telferscot Road School, Lambeth, and left 4 October 1918 for an orphanage. His address was 91 Salford and father’s names is given as Peter Dunton, an engineer.

On the 1921 census he is a boarder in Dartford.  His place of birth and parents are not known.

A later record also says his place of birth and parents are not known.

I know about his later life.

So, can anyone help find any earlier records for Peter?  Perhaps his name was changed. Was his father really Peter or was he invented?

It’s difficult when there is so little to go on.

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Another Foundling Hospital query
« on: Wednesday 11 May 22 20:47 BST (UK)  »
I've been following karencda's thread about the records of the London Foundling Hospital but I don't want to hijack her thread.

I am trying to find out about a baby born in 1910 who may have been a foundling. He lived in London as a child, parents and place of birth not known.

Are the records of the Foundling Hospital searchable by name they gave him?

Would the records be too recent to be 'open'?.

I have 2 DNA matches on My Heritage who share about 60cM with me.  They share about 7000cM with each other which suggests they are the same person or are identical twins.

Their profiles give different ages.  They have different first names & surnames and live in different continents.

I have tried making contact.

I'm puzzled.  Any suggestions?

MyHeritage have a tempting subscription offer at the moment.

I have uploaded DNA onto MyHeritage and I like the way that works.

Does MyHeritage have any records that are not available on Ancestry or FindMyPast?
