Armed Forces / Chelsea Pensioner
« on: Thursday 03 December 15 11:30 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please shed any light on two records I have found for James Caves.?
As both James Caves served in the same regiment and for similar periods I assume they are for the same man although it seems strange, to me, that someone who is discharged for almost daily epileptic fits would be fit again.

As in the second record James is described as an ‘out pensioner’ I wonder if he married back in Bedfordshire after his first discharge.

Before the second discharge when James served a further 51 days was this service at the Chelsea Hospital?

Also is it possible to know how long a pension was paid (when James Caves died) and if a pensioner had any dependants?

I know very little about these records so any help or guidance would be appreciated
The two records roughly are;

James Caves Birth year 1765 Birth in parish Wootton, Bedford, Bedfordshire. England
Regiment Scots Guards. Discharged 19 May 1798. (attested 1784 aged 19/20)
James Caves by trade a Labourer aged 33 served 13 years 3 months is subject to Epileptic fits  which come on every other night and renders him unfit for service. Discharged at London 19 May 1798 by Cavendish Liston Lt Gl Comd of 3rd Regt of Foot.

Bedfordshire / John Cave one christenting in two parishes?
« on: Tuesday 24 November 15 21:23 GMT (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help shed any light on  two christening on the IGI which have the same date but different parishes? (probably a very simple answer for you clever lot).

John Cave s of John and Mary bap 22 Sep 1776 at Marston Moretaine, Bedford. I039224
John Cave s of John and Mary bap 22 Sep 1776 at Wootton by Bedford, Bedford. P005001

Batch numbers are given for both Wootton and  Wootton By Bedford. Are they the same place?

I wonder if either/both are for this (my) John Cave.
In which parish should I look for his parents?

On the 1841 census I have John Cave born between 1772-1776 living at Up End  Kempston, John’s wife Fanny was born about 1779 and I believe she may have been Frances Braybrooks who John married on 11 Oct 1798 at All Saints Kempston Beds. John Cave was not with Fanny/Francis on the 1851 census and I think he was buried;

John Cave otp aged 72 born 1777 buried 11 Mar 1849 at All Saints. Kempston. Beds.

Although I think John and Francis Cave may have had at least four children in Kempston (Pheoby 1806, Joseph 1818, Elizabeth 1823) I do not have a baptism them and would particularly love to find a baptism for their son (my) Charles Cave who says he was born in Kempston about 1810. As John and Fanny married in 1798 there may have been older children.

Any info/ideas would be appreciated>

Bedfordshire / Help with Tempsford or Sandy address on 1939 Register
« on: Tuesday 17 November 15 18:05 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone please help?
I been unable to find my grandmother Ethel Thurley born in 1886 on the 1939 Register.
I do not know for certain where Ethel was living in 1939 but when she died she was living in Church Street Tempsford, previously I believe she lived in Mill Lane also in Tempsford. I also understand that she was living in Station Road, Sandy in 1924.

I have tried all combinations and the only candidate on FindMyPast seems to be;
Ethel  Husrley  1886  Bedford M.B.  Bedfordshire

I am reluctant to pay for this transcription for a 'possibility'. Is some clever Rootschatter able to find out the address of Ethel Husrley from the register?

Any help would be appreciated.

Essex / Sarah Carriage 1806 Barling
« on: Wednesday 02 April 14 17:23 BST (UK)  »
I have been unable to find a baptism for Sarah Ann Carriage (or variation maybe Kerridge or Carrage) born 1806/1807 in Barling / Canewdon as the census. A lodger of Sarah Ann in 1851 was William Carriage born 1808 Barling who may have been related. In 1841 William Carriage was possibly living in Althorne Essex married to Mary possibly about 1825 from the age of their eldest child. William may been in Steeple in 1847 according to a newspaper report.
Can anyone find a marriage circa 1825 or baptism about 1808 for William Carriage?

My guess is that Sarah Ann Carriage is the daughter of Joseph and Mary Carriage but I would appreciate any help or confirmation of my thoughts as below.

Joseph Carriage was a widow when he married Mary Shed a widow on 24 Oct 1796 at Barling both made their mark witness Daniel Pedler and Thomas Blencoe signed

Joseph and Mary Carriage had a daughter Jane baptised in 1803 at Barling. Mary Carriage wife of Joseph was buried 10 Jan 1808 at Barling.

Only eight months after the death of Mary Carriage, Joseph and Sarah Carriage had two children Daniel and Elizabeth Carriage baptised in Sep 1808 at Barling (I wonder if they were twins as Sarah had had two sets of twins previously?). Daniel was buried a month later but his name does give a suggest that perhaps Joseph Carriage was bap 15 Apr 1753 s of Daniel and Sarah at Maldon Essex.

I could not find a marriage in Barling but Joseph Carriage married Sarah Matthews 5 Nov 1810 at Steeple Essex. This may be a totally different couple.
Are there any notes on this marriage??

I wondered if Sarah Matthews was a widow when she married Joseph and found in Barling;
Edward and Sarah Matthews who bap their first child James at Barling in 1789 then a twin son George bap in 1796 and a twin son Thomas bap in 1797. Thomas and George were probably both buried as paupers in 1796 also possibly an unbaptised twin Judith also in 1796 (within weeks). Edward Matthews (Labourer) was buried 15 Sep 1807 at Barling. Essex.
Who did Edward Matthews marry around 1789?

Did Edward's widow Sarah marry Joseph Carriage in Steeple??

I wondered if Elizabeth 1808 may have been Sarah Ann but Elizabeth Carriage married in 1829 at Southchurch and Sarah Ann's husband witnessed her wedding!! Obviously this links Sarah Ann to this Carriage family but I cannot find Sarah Ann Carriage baptised in 1806/7 in Canewdon or Barling. If Joseph and Sarah married in Steeple perhaps Sarah Ann was baptised there? Could somebody look for me please??

The Common Room / Poor Rate 1879
« on: Wednesday 02 April 14 08:37 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know who would be liable to pay 'poor rate'? I found a newspaper report and wonder if this offence may give some information about James.

1879. Rochford. James Bradford of Prittlewell a farmer was summoned for non-payment of poor rate amounting to three pounds for the parish of Eastwood district.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.

Essex / Can anybody find James Bradford?
« on: Tuesday 01 April 14 15:22 BST (UK)  »
I found a newspaper report but cannot find James Bradford on the 1871 or 1881 Census?
Is it significant that James was a farmer in Prittlewell and owed money to Eastwood??

Chelmsford Chronicle, Friday 18 July 1879. Rochford. James Bradford of Prittlewell a farmer was summoned for non-payment of poor rate amounting to three pounds for the parish of Eastwood district, A warrant was issued.

The only baptism I have is;
James Bradford bap 13 Sep 1840 s of Matthew (Lab) and Ann at Southchurch. SEAX

The only other possibility was also a boy named James Bradford on the 1851 census s of Thomas and Sarah but on other census he was named as John Bradford born 1839 Canewdon and also registered as John in 1839 Rochford Apr-Jun vol 12 page 189

Essex / Samuel Read 1791 N Fambridge
« on: Wednesday 26 February 14 16:19 GMT (UK)  »
Can any help please?
I am looking for a marriage for Samuel Read to Mary about 1815.

According to the census Samuel Read was born 1791 in Woodham Ferris and his wife Mary was born 1795 in East Hanningfield.
The eldest child I know of was Sophia Read born 1816 in Hockley, Essex where Robert and Samuel were born 1822-1826 and possibly Joseph in 1829. They then perhaps moved to North Fambridge by 1833 where Thomas was born and Mary Ann in 1836.
Any help would be appreciated

Essex / Martha Bines Canewdon
« on: Monday 24 February 14 21:15 GMT (UK)  »
Could anyone please help with the baptism at Canewdon for Martha Bines which I think was about 1833-1836 as census
I think her parents were John Bines and Rhoda possibly Outen who had eight children in Canewdon between 1834-1859.

I would be grateful for a marriage for John Bines and Rhoda and also if there were any other Martha Bines baptised in Canewdon during this period.
(I have a real conundrum and need clarification on these points first)

Thank you

Essex / Another Matthew/Mathew Bradford
« on: Friday 21 February 14 09:50 GMT (UK)  »
After ages I compiling my information and found another Mathew Bradford who I do not have a baptism for;

On the census Mathew Bradford was born 1827/8 in Great Wakering (Agr Lab). He appears to have died in 1902. He probably married Susannah Keys in 1852.

Can anybody find a baptism for him in Great Wakering?

Although Mathew is with Mary Ann the daughter of Thomas Bradford in 1881 I think is unlikely that he is her brother as she had a brother Mathew born 1834.

He could possibly be the son of Mathew who’s wife Ann was also born at Great Wakering.
Their children were baptised in Southchurch 1829 onwards and their first daughter was Ann but they did not have a son Mathew baptised, so Mathew 1827/28 'fits' here but obviously I need some proof if possible.

I have seen on a Tree that says Matthew Snr married a Ann Neal/Heal about 1829.
Can anyone confirm this marriage perhaps as early as 1827 in the Great Wakering area?

Thank you in advance for any help.
