Hello Russ,

1861 census, Heugh Hall Row, Quarrington, Co. Durham :
Joseph Luke, Head, Wid, 46, Coal Miner, b. Co. Durham Beamish,
John Luke, son, Unm, 22, Coal Miner, b. Co. Durham Coxhoe,
James Luke, son, Unm, 20, Coal Miner, b. Coxhoe,
Joseph Luke, son, Unm, 18, Coal Miner, b. Coxhoe,
Jane Luke, dau, 16, b. Coxhoe,
Ann Luke, dau, 13, b. Coxhoe,
George Luke, son, 11, b. Coxhoe,
Thomas Luke, son, 9, b. Coxhoe,
William Luke, son, 7, b. Coxhoe,
Elizabeth Luke, dau, 3, b. Coxhoe,

Looks like this is the Joseph Luke from 1871, confirms he had a son John of the right age to be Georges father.

There is a marriage of a John Luke and an Eleanor Clark, Mar qtr 1862, Durham, vol 10a, page 283. Took place in Durham Central area according to Durham Registrars site, includes Cassop and Quarrington. Can't see them in 1871 census.

There is a death of an Eleanor Luke, Jun qtr 1866, Durham vol 10a, page 194, aged 26.

In 1861 census, Front Row, Cassop there is an Ambrose Clark and family including daughter Elleanor Clark, aged 21, b. Pity Me, Co. Durham. Could be John Lukes wife.

Alan.

Hello Lynn,
I know your post is 18 months old, but just in case you haven't found the info yet :
Richard Smith died 9 Nov 1862 in Cockerton.
His first wife Elizabeth nee Hall died in 1844.  Sarah Robinson was his second wife who he married in 1844, I don't think they had any children. She was living in Newcastle as an Inn keeper at the Carlisle Hotel in 1871, and a BoardingHouse keeper in 1881.
Regards,
Alan.
