Lincolnshire / Odd Fellows Inn North Parade Manthorpe Cum Little Gonerby Grantham
« on: Monday 29 December 14 17:17 GMT (UK)  »
In the course of my research into my ancestor John Amos the Grantham chairmaker born abt 1764, I have established that before his death in 1842 he was living in North Parade (he owned property in North Parade) and is described as a "retailer of beer". The 1881 census reveals his granddaughter Millicent Priestman was a beer house keeper, Odd Fellows Inn at 35 North Parade. I don't think the Odd fellows Inn still exists, does anyone with knowledge of Grantham know what the building is now and does anyone have any further information about The Odd Fellows?
Thanks and a happy new year to all

Thanks to Tup1 and Trish for your contributions to the discussion, much appreciated. Please let me know if you come across anything on the birth of chairmaker John Amos; somewhere deep down in my file I have written Thomas? as a possible father but I'm not sure where that came from!

Hi Wilser
Yes, I'm still researching and I would love to read your information. I have managed to find more details about the son John b.1797 d1859 (took his own life) and John jnr's son William (my direct line relatives) but know nothing about John Amos snr b abt 1766 and his circumstances. I have written up my findings in a brief summary and am happy to email a copy to you (for comment and correction?) if you let me have an email address; I can be contacted at lbarra@tiscali.co.uk
Thanks for taking the time to contact me

Thanks Arthur for supplying interesting leads. I'm not sure of the connection between my mother or indeed her family to the company.....yet another mystery to investigate in researching the family history!
best wishes

I have a black &white postcard left by my late Mother of staff busy working in the office of Chas R H Pickard & Son Leeds; on the back is recorded 1935. Does anyone have any idea of the nature of the firm's business and where it was situated?
Thanks Maggie B

Thanks for all the hard work Kath. St Wulframs looks a lovely church, I hope to visit one day as various members of the Amos family are buried there.

thanks for the suggestion about Google Maps, I have found "Busy B Bridals" at 35 Watergate. It looks as though this could be the the old butcher's shop, the building looks pretty old

Thanks for the suggestion. I have checked out the website and it's quite frustrating; I believe Watergate was re-named Westgate and there are 2 photos of Westgate taken in 1904.  However, they seem to be taken at no 77 and 22 and so I guess our family shop was somewhere in between! They do however provide a flavour of the area which is interesting.
best wishes

The butcher's shop in Watergate (34/35) Grantham was owned by the Amos family during the c19; I understand that before it's demolition it might have had the sign Amos & Shepherd outside. Does anyone have a photo of the premise or know where I could obtain a copy?
Thankd Maggie B
