Berkshire / John GREENOUGH 1848ish Upton
« on: Friday 12 July 13 21:35 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Can anyone help me find the origins of John William Greenough, please. I have him back to 1881,  but then I can find no reference of him backwards from there..

In the censuses from 1881-1911 he says he was born in Upton Berks in circa 1848-1851.
I suspect that he may be illeg (or the product of a first marriage), and therefore in the 51/61/71 censuses under another (stepfather's)  name. I cannot find his marriage to a Jane born 1848 North Stoke, Oxon, either.
Greenough is a surname that often gets mistranscribed but I have used up all the variations that I can think of and I don't have parish registers for Upton.
Thanks

Hello,
I can't help with your last question but...
From death registrations it looks like Ellen's mother Elizabeth died in 1899 before your grandfather was born.
In 1871 she was the wife of Richard Jones age 37 aglab born Hambleden Bucks, with the same two Bond children and Ellen as in 1881, the two boys being stepsons of Richard.
From marriage refs she married him as Elizabeth Bond in 1869
Marriages Sep 1869  FreeBMD
BOND  Elizabeth    Henley  3a 787
JONES  Richard     Henley  3a 787
In 1861 she was the wife of Thomas Bond age 24 born Henley with son Alfred.
It looks as if this is her marriage
Marriages Sep 1859  FreeBMD
Bond  Thomas    Henley  3a 690
Palmer  Elizabeth     Henley  3a 690
In 1851 Elizabeth Palmer b 1836 Ardley was a servant to Mary Watts widow in Lower Heyford, Bicester Reg Dist.
In 1841 she appears as dau? of James 1816 and Ann 1816 in Ardley Bicester. Also in the household are William Palmer age 3 and Louisa Palmer age 2months.
Thomas Bond died
Deaths Mar 1863   FreeBMD

Richard Jones
I haven't been able to find a Richard Jones b 1834 Hambleden Bucks before 1871, so you will need his marriage cert to ascertain his father, and go from there. There is a Richard Jones of the right age in Bicester in 1861 but he is a policeman from North Wales.  I haven't been able to find a viable death for Richard Jones either.

From this it looks as if your Ellen (if you prove that she was the mother of your grandfather), was the only child of Richard and Elizabeth Jones.
Hope this helps.

Berkshire / Re: John Augustus Jones - Ada Priscilla Austin

Hi Imber,
I only know that in 1911 Ada was a 19 year old housemaid in Hastings for a widowed Katherine Cooper. Before that she was with her parents in Cookham. They were my great grandparents.
After 1911 I know not where Ada was. Her marriage just says "of Maidenhead". She could have just come back to Berkshire to get married. She and her husband could have returned to Sussex, so it looks more and more likely that the deaths I found in Sussex may be the right ones.
Doesn't help me much though.

There are other Jones families in the Wantage and Wallingford areas who are related to my family but there does not appear to be a link to John Augustus there.
Thanks for your thoughts.

John Augustus JONES is in Criccieth in 1891, age 6, born Bala, Merioneth, son of John William JONES. John the father was a game keeper. Does that tie in with his occupation on John Augustus's marriage. John the father was still a Game keeper in 1911.

Ian C

Hello Ian,
Thank you for your interest.
No, unfortunately it does not. John, the father of this John, also in 1901 and 1911 is a gamekeeper, but on the 1917 marriage certificate it says he was an insurance agent. Hence my quandry as to whether this is the right one.
I haven't been very successful in finding John Augustus' service record either, as that might show up something.  Looking for a link with the Army and Maidenhead was a final throw of the dice as there were certainly no children registered in that area.
There is an Ada P Jones death registered in Battle in 1852, and one for a John A in Hove in 1961 which could be them, but.....

Berkshire / John Augustus Jones - Ada Priscilla Austin
« on: Thursday 11 July 13 01:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,
Can anyone tell me what units might have been based in Maidenhead in 1917?
I have the marriage cert of my great aunt, Ada Priscilla Austin, married to John Augustus Jones in 1917 at Maidenhead St Andrew and Mary.
He was a 33yr old soldier (of Maidenhead) with father John William Jones. The witnesses were Ada's sister, my grandmother, and a John Woods whose name means nought to me.
As John Augustus was a soldier there must have been a reason why he was in/of Maidenhead. The only John Augustus I can find was Welsh but I don't want to spend a fortune on wrong certs, so am trying to find out more before I order it.
I am completely stuck going backwards or forwards so help, please.

The Workhouse was called Radnor House and at 35 New St, Henley on Thames. I presume that you have your William's birth cert.
If not, they will show whether he was born in the Workhouse or was admitted after his mother died.

Ok Jan

Don't like the look of that one any more.   :'(  :'(  :'(

Ray
Hi Ray,
Ditto, and so far none of the other Janes born about 1873 Blandford pan out either. Looks like I am going to have to buy Silas Frederick John's birth cert to see what it says.

Hello,
Thank you for working on my behalf.
My link is actually Elsie Maria A Stratford 1901-1967 who married (Silas) Frederick John Sturgess (1900-1979).
Like you, I suspect that his father, Frederick Charles Sturgess and Jane's purported first child, Violet,  is not his, and is either illegit or from an earlier marriage of hers.
All very frustrating.
Silas and Elsie had 2 children. Only one of them seems to have stayed on the IOW.  Other than speculative work using the national registrations, I have not yet gone too deeply into that scion.

Hi,
My thoughts and thought processes exactly. However, I cannot find a Violet of any surname in Portsmouth/Portsea registrations, so perhaps even that was wrong.
