That list does not include fathers - Those were the people that got married in 1907 - so the choice for Maurice would be Margaret Ryan, Anne Connell or the missing name ?

Sandra

Yes, I know, have just looked on irishgeneslogy.ie to see the register image. That Maurice Hyland’s father is given as Maurice Hyland.

On the off chance he returned to Westmeath - have you checked the marriages in 1907 ?

Maurice Hyland
Date of Registration   1907, Jul-Aug-Sep Mullingar, Ireland

choices were :-

Michael Hope
Margaret Ryan
Anne Connell
Edward Gavagan
Maurice Hyland

Sandra

I wish it was, but unless the registrar has made a mistake, my man’s father is Edward Hyland.

He does make it to New York aboard the Oceanic, indexed as Calli Hyland (with Morris pencilled in over Calli); aged 25, says he's from Mullingar and seems to be travelling with two others:

Bound for a Jos. Galen(?), address illegible in New York City; the woman above Jane Galt also from Mullingar says she is bound for the same place and it says "to brother" so perhaps Joseph's last name is Galt.  In the outbound record, Jane's last name looks like Folk.

Aha! Brilliant find. I have just been wondering what had happened to the chap who left Queenstown in 1902, just to rule him in or out.

Thank you.

Thanks for looking, Sandra - much appreciated.

Back to Ireland to see if I can find him.

My chap is born 1877 in Robinstown, County Westmeath, Ireland, the son of Edward and Eliza nee Coghlan.

He’s a 25 year old servant in Irish 1901 census, not living with his parents. Not been able to track him down in 1911 census so far, but may be time for another look.

A ships list has a 25 year old Maurice Hyland leaving Queenstown in Ireland for New York in 1902, on board the Oceanic.

I can’t find him at the other end, having tried Ancestry and familysearch. The only likely candidate, age wise, in the USA 1910 and 1920 census, has an immigration year of 1882.

Can SKS see if they can locate him?

Thank you! I'm also UK-based, had no problems using that link.

There's a post in the Reddit thread suggesting that it only works if you signed up at .com in the first place (rather than .co.uk, for example). I don't remember doing that, but it's possible.

I’m pretty sure I’ve only ever used .co.uk
