Armed Forces / Re: Royal Marines WW2 photographs
« on: Thursday 12 November 20 09:00 GMT (UK)  »
Since posting the photographs I have obtained Dad's service record showing which craft he served on and where his war service took him. He started his training at Eastney Barracks, Southsea, was sent to bases in Scotland for Landing Craft training and eventually  served aboard LCG(L)s 10, 11, 13 and 18. He saw action in Operation Husky, the landings at Sicily and Italy and at Sword beach in the Normandy landings on D Day. He also served in India, Burma and Malaya. There is also another photo taken during or after his basic training. It would be great if someone out there recognizes any of the people in any of the pictures.

I agree with you. Whilst the first half did concentrate on WW1 I genuinely felt moved by the story of his ancestor being locked away for so very long.
On his mother's side, I wonder if there are still members of his family involved in fairgrounds to this day ?

What a fascinating thread and some of the deaths were really gruesome. My own G.G.Grandfather had a nasty end.

Hi. My Ancestry subscription ended in mid May. I was wondering if anyone knows of any current special offers, as the only subs I can find are expensive - £69.99 for 6 months UK/Ireland or £99.99 for 6 months worldwide sub  :o. I should say I tried the link in a previous post in the Common Room -
https://www.ancestry.co.uk/cs/offers/subscribe?dna=crossAct
but just get the above offer.
Thanks in advance,
Frostyknight

It would be either the railway or by canal as the coach service between London and Birmingham ceased in 1839
