That sounds like a good suggestion to me and I think I will go that way - thanks!

Here is my problem -

For the English speaking people who will read my family history, exactly how should I write this woman's name -

Clémence "Léocade" Caron  OR

Clémence nicknamed Léocade Caron  OR

Clémence AKA Léocade Caron  OR

Clémence Léocade Caron OR

Is there some other way of writing her name ????

Please, someone, a definitive way in which this can be resolved?

So could the name in quotes NOT be a name given at baptism ?

This has no doubt been asked before, but -

In the name provided in French as CARON, Clémence "Léocade" what do the double quotes around Léocade mean, please?

Osprey - Thanks AGAIN for that - it confirms several things for me.

Yes, you did - sorry - I'm almost 87 and find all this difficult to deal with! BUT have I got this right? Pierre or Peter Caron married twice - first to Rebecca Spring Mantor in 1844 when he was 21 years old and then to Margaret Ann Perry in 1859 when he was 34 years old (his grandfather Henry or Henri Caron was a witness to that second marriage), after Peter had deserted Rebecca?

If all this is correct, I apologise if I seem to be a bit obtuse in following it all, but I must say how much I do appreciate the effort you have but in to help me.

I now know that Peter Joseph Caron, on 31 January 1859 in Holborn, married Margaret Ann Perry (I have the certificate).

BUT, I need help in finding the above Peter's birth! His father was Peter (probably Anglisied from Pierre) Joseph Caron, who I am hoping was the son of Henri Caron who came to London as a Huguenot refugee.

Thanks for that, Osprey - it could prove to be most helpful.

More and more it seems to me that my Peter (Joseph) Caron who named himself Harmer was the father of Mary Elizabeth Caron, born January 1867 in Bethnal Green (who called herself Dolly Harmer).
Does anyone have any other theories on that?
