However the only way to be sure would be to trace her all the way back to her birth - any chance of doing that ?

That is the only mention I have of her, I don't know where she was born or if she was married. I only really picked it out because of the age and her name..... wondered if she could be the mother or sister or aunt of my relative Alexander MacDonald who married Ann Rain in Kirkby Ravensworth in 1750 and had 4 children baptised at Cleasby between 1753 and 1760. I suppose the Ann buried at Cleasby could be Ann Rain as I have no death or burial for her. In that case the 105 probably isn't correct as she would have been in her late 50s when the youngest child was born.

I will need to find the register and check the transcription is accurate then see if there is any parish chest material that could help. Something else to keep me by when we take a holiday to North Yorkshire!

I can't find Jane on the 1841 census :( I did find a Margaret O'Neil and George Miller marriage on 19 June 1825 in Penrith, and a Jane Miller baptised 28 Aug 1825 at Hesket In The Forest  (Cumberland) and wondered if that was her. Perhaps she used her maiden name for some reason.

No real surprises on Robert's 1841 census..... him, his wife, 3 sons and 2 daughters. I am guessing that George's father was one Robert's sons. One daughter would only have been 11 when George was born and the other 19...... but neither are named Jane :)

Robert's surviving sons are Richard, Thomas, Alexander and John so no clues there either.

I wonder what happened to George? I lose him after the 1861 census. Thomas and Alexander both emigrated so perhaps George followed on.

Was Margaret in Catterick because her brother John (b abt 1831) was there? He married Sarah Robinson at Hipwell, Parish of Catterick 28 Jan 1867. I can't make out John's occupation on his marriage certificate but it looks like either potter or porter.

Robert's wife is / was Ann or Annas Alderson. I know that name has appeared many times before on this site!

I just want to tie up the loose ends from the census rather than do an in-depth search at this point.

My direct line comes from Robert's sister Mary. I am her 4xGreat-Grand-daughter. My maiden name was McDonald :)

The Alexander buried at Barningham on 3 Jan 1854 was born in 1789 according to the National Burial Index for England & Wales. I'm afraid there isn't an image of the original parish entry, just a transcription.

I think this Alexander was baptised in Manfield NRY UK on 28 Jan 1789, born 2 Dec 1788, son of Alexander and Margaret WARDEL, and younger brother to the Robert who married Ann Alderson.

Alexander (1788 - 1854) married Eleanor ETHERINGTON and they had at least 2 children, John, bap 3 Apr 1812, Alexander, bap 7 Feb 1816. There is another Alexander bap 3 Jan 1827 to Alexander and Eleanor but that may be a grandson, I have not got that far yet. All baptisms at Barningham NRY.

George Miller O'Neill was baptised 4 October 1847 in Bowes. The mother is Jane O'Neill and no father given, so probably illegitimate.

He is on the 1851 and 1861 census as "Grandson" (last name now transformed into O'Neal) in the household of Robert DONALD (actually MACDONALD) Robert died in 1870 and I am not sure what happened to George. I think he may have emigrated, at least two of Robert's sons did, one to Canada and one to Australia.

I also don't know who George's father was. I would guess that his father was a MacDonald as there is no marriage between an O'Neill (O'NEAL) and no Jane in Robert's family that I can find.

Thank you everyone.

I am putting this family "on hold" for a while as I have to work on my Dad's family - he has a significant birthday in May and I'd like to write up his paternal family as far as I can as a gift for him. For years he has said he wasn't interested and now he wants chapter and verse!!!!
