The Common Room / Re: Findmypast discounts?
« on: Friday 28 July 23 14:15 BST (UK)  »
I already get the 15% loyalty discount but for the last 2-years I've asked if they can improve on that, and both times they have - not by much, but every little counts!.

They wouldn't give me any extra discount on the Premium package though, so I took out the Pro subscription instead and then bought the 1921 as an add-on - and they automatically applied the same additional discount!  Go figure  ???

The Stay Safe Board / Re: PharmaT’s special project

I think Pharma is stronger, braver and more courageous than any of us realised.

And also stronger, braver and more courageous than perhaps she herself realised.

PharmaT, it takes enormous strength to just keep putting one foot in front of the other at times, so I take my hat off to you for achieving so much more.

What story is well known in Canada?  I’ve never heard of Kevin Clifton.  Now I’m intrigued (we don’t get the show here)!

This story:  https://freepages.rootsweb.com/~coigach/genealogy/matooskie.htm

Also mentioned a few years ago here on Rootschat: https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=228424.0

ADDED: Just reading the penultimate post on the above thread (4 Aug 2021) "I'm a researcher currently working for a UK based history TV programme and I'd love to hear more about what you know about Matooskie and also your connections with her descendants if posssible.  Thank you so much, Hermione".  Someone named Hermione Hellyer was working as a Development Researcher on WDYTYA in Aug 2021 - same person?

The Kevin Clifton episode is one of my favourites so far, if only because of his amazement and enthusiasm as the story unfolded.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Re: Mary Ann Wilson Brickwall, who are her parents?

Interesting  :)

I got sidetracked with a John Asquith Wilson, but I think the correct one was baptised at Staveley, Yorkshire on 2 Jun 1844: Asker s/o William & Mary Wilson Labourer, Staveley

He’s with them in the 1851 census at Staveley as Usquith Wilson aged 7.  His parents and two siblings are still there in 1861, which leads to the birth registration of his brother:

WILSON, EDWARD mmn ASKWITH  GRO Reference: 1853  M Quarter in OF KNARESBRO  Volume 09A  Page 87

Also two brothers (one presumably died):
WILSON, WILLIAM mmn ASKWITH  GRO Reference: 1846  J Quarter in OF KNARESBRO  Volume 23  Page 425
WILSON, WILLIAM mmn ASKWITH  GRO Reference: 1850  J Quarter in OF KNARESBRO  Volume 23  Page 439

Its also interesting that Wilson & Mary Ann's second daughter is named Ruth, but it isn't a name that seems to appear in his family.

Their first daughter, Nancy, seems to be named after his sister, who may in turn have been named after his grandmother (this is only speculation, I haven't looked).

The only sort-of explanation I can come up with is this marriage in Kilburn on 15 Mar 1862

Might connect to that marriage
MAYNARD, MARY
Mother's Maiden Surname:
GRO Reference: 1861  D Quarter in THIRSK  Volume 09D  Page 337

Baptism at Kilburn, 24 Nov 1861
Mary Ann
Parent Ruth Wilson, Single Woman
abode Wass

Ooh, I'm liking the look of that!

The only sort-of explanation I can come up with is this marriage in Kilburn on 15 Mar 1862:

Askwith WILSON 20 Farmers Servant, Sessay, Father = William Wilson, Labourer
Ruth MAYNARD 20 Spinster, Wass, Father = Robert Maynard, Labourer
Witnesses: Elizabeth Maynard (X), John Wilson

Ruth signed, but Askwith signed X.

I don't see any sign of them after this  ???
