Essex Lookup Requests / Bunns
« on: Tuesday 01 April 08 15:19 BST (UK)  »
hi
Anyone out there looking for Bunns. Particularly William H (prob Henry cos I think I found parents). He was born in Peldon, Colchester, Essex around 1811. The first census I can find for him is in Wrexham, Denbighshire in 1861. He married an Emma (born in Southampton around 1825) and looks like had his first 2 children in Limerick 1852 & 3. the rest were born in Wrexham (was he married before?) and why would he have gone to Ireland when everyone else was leaving. Anyone researching Bunns from Peldon know anything. Either the surname for Emma, marriage date or anything really. Thanks
Elaine

That sounds like her too. the dates fit and she is spelt differently on all documents. Just wish it was something more exotic than Jones though.
Thanks again
Elaine :)

Cheers Gadget, That sounds like my Lot. Any luck on Dulce (Dulcie, Dulsy) in Cyffylliog or Bettws (Gwerful Goch)

The Lighter Side / Re: Unfortunate surnames of the past

Hi everybody. Its my first time.

While at school .......years ago my friend was a Littlewood who later married a Smallwood. Her sister married a Forrest so at least one of them went up in the world. Also in my year at school was  an Allcock (pronounced aycock) a Woodcock and a Bentcock. And on the cuter side... a Sally Sparrow

My Taid was called Keith Glasspoole up until 1934 (born 1911) He was born in Shrewsbury while his mother Nellie was in service. She didnt turn up for her chores one morning and when someone checked on her they found that she'd given birth during the night. Nobody knew she was pregnant. Anyway..... He changed his name for 2 shillings in 1934 to Williams after his stepfather.

I doubt it. They all seem to be miners but I dont suppose that rules it out. I had a hard enough time getting even the remembered names out of existing family. my dad didnt even know his grandparents names as he just referred to them as Nain Adwy & Nain pentre which was where they lived. There is an uncofirmed rumour that my Taid once played football for Wales but thats another branch. He married Lots great grandaughter.

Thanks gadget (didnt expect a reply so soon so next week will be great) and thanks Donna

No wonder I couldnt find them in 61c. Lot as Job & Dulce as Daley. How did you do it. I went to Ancestry (Ta!) and found it transcribed wrongly, but it all still fits. the children are the same. I did notice that Dulce still has her birthplace as Bettws though but on another c (51 or 71) it clearly says Cyffylliog.

My Nain's (great grandaughter of Lot) whole family had the nickname of 'The Lots' but nobody in the existing family can tell me why. Now its all starting to make sense. My Dad tells me that it was common to tag on a parents name to distinguish one John or Thomas from another and could be carried through generations. Thankfully the nickname stopped a generation or two ago.

Merionethshire Lookup Requests / help i'm stuck

Hi

Not sure whether anyone can help but here goes....

I have traced a part of my tree to Merionethshire

Lot Jones born Gwyddelwern about 1811. He married Dulce (Dulsy) R, (dont know what R stands for) born Cyffylliog about 1808. They later lived in Coedpoeth Denb. Found on 51 & 71 census. I also think i've found that Lot died in 1888 in Wrexham area. The places of birth differ on both census' Lot- Llywyn Gaer (could be incorrect spelling as copy is poor) Dulce R- Bettws. I thought they could be smaller hamlets near Gwyddelwern and Cyffylliog but I cant find anything relevant on the old maps.
I am trying to go further back and am wondering if it is possible to find the names of their parents somehow.

Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks
