The Common Room / Imperial War Museum

I wonder if anyone has been successful in contacting the IWM?
I sent them an email in December last year about a document I thought might be of interest, and got a reply on 24th January, saying someone would be in touch soon, which they weren't. I emailed again mid-April and that one came back not deliverable.
I don't imagine trying to phone them will get me anywhere. Perhaps I should take my mother's advice and write a letter!

The Common Room / Re: Old Houses / Todays houses

  What a lovely photo!

I have never attempted to find any ancestral homes, as being mainly rural, I imagine they have all disappeared. The house I was brought up in, and which my grandfather lived in all his married life and beyond, was a white weatherboard one, built in 1900. I can't bear to see it now, as it is now stained brown, presumably a preservative, and appears to be left empty and going derelict. I don't know if it is privately owned or whether it still belongs to the estate.

Technical Help / Re: Libre Office problem

Thanks - I seem to have sorted it following the instructions. Never got to grips with spreadsheets, I'm afraid - I have decided I can live without them.

That seems to describe the problem exactly, but how did I turn on track changes? Will the forum tell me that?

I have found the forum and think I can find my way - thank you.

Technical Help / Libre Office problem
« on: Tuesday 07 May 24 19:47 BST (UK)  »
I hope someone can help me with an odd problem. I am using a Libre Office document, including a table for my expenses (I have been doing this for years) and it has done something odd - 2 snips attached. There is a sudden colour change, underlining, and when I try to delete, it gets crossed out instead. My technical computer knowledge is basic.

It also depends where in the country they were. Dobfarm is describing North country parishes, I think, which bears little resemblance to the parishes in my area, which are smaller with one ancient church and graveyard.

I would say it was likely the burial took place in the church graveyard; many non-conformist chapels did not have graveyards.

Thank you for those - the "bric-a-brac" thing certainly seems to relate, and the date is about right.

The Common Room / Caledonian Market

Browsing the local newspapers for the early 1930s, I found a list of all the local village contributions to the hospital building fund. A large number of the villages raised money with a Caledonian Market. I am guessing this was a fashionable name for a bazaar/sale of work, but they raised a decent amount of money. Any other thoughts?
