Lancashire / Re: Robert OLIVER date and place of birth query, Liverpool 1879?
« on: Monday 27 May 24 03:25 BST (UK)  »
Thanks haliared.
Yes a possibility.  Honora (Nora) was b 1883 and married Charles Rodgers in 1908
Honora's Mother Margaret McMullan b Antrim c1861 married Henry McCarthy, Seaman in 1885 in NZ.  A Bridget McMullan was a witness to their marriage so I had wondered if their is a connection?

Still trying to find when Robert Oliver and Margaret/Bridget McMullen arrived in NZ.
I have asked a family member if they have Margaret's death certificate, and to check if it records how long she was in NZ?

Many thanks Fiddlerslass for your suggestions.

RE 1903 reference to Robert Oliver.  I have ruled him out as the Police Gazette refers to him being a native of NZ b 1882.  There is a birth 1882/5007 for a Robert Oliver parents James Oliver/Elizabeth.

Charles Rodgers according to his WW1 file has his birth as 27 October 1882, Port Chalmers, NZ.  There is a Henry Charles Rodgers b 1883/177774 parents Charles Henry Rodgers/Mary [Clarke m 1881/1886].  Mary appears to have been born 1865/27693.  Will look into this family further re sister-in-law possibility?

I hadn't thought about the possibility of Robert being in the merchant navy so will look into this - thanks for the suggestion.

Many thanks ColC, CaroleW, Dundee, Tazzie, Ciderdrinker, Wivenhoe and Haliared for your interest and postings, which are much appreciated.

To answer your questions/suggestions:
# 2 I will follow up on your link to arrival info on ss "Rimutaka"  to see if I can find anything further to rule him in or out.
# 3 Noted Robert's death and Will info
#7 & 8 - I am in contact with a direct descendent of Honora (Nora).  They would like to know who is  Robert Oliver, as he medals have been handed down through the family.  So far they have been unable to find a connection.
My interest? - this piqued my interest and I am seeking to help the family.  Also I have been doing some military research; ie updating my list of participants at the Battles of Gate Pa/Te Ranga in 1864 in NZ.  Also helping to identify/contact family of WW2 soldiers of the 28th Maori Battalion who had unclaimed medals.

I had hoped that the Public Service List might contain the name of Robert Oliver  as he worked for Public Works in Clyde, and possibly a DOB but so far his name has not been found.  Will keep looking!

Can someone help to confirm date and place of birth of Robert OLIVER? Only seeking to verify date and place of birth below.

I am helping someone with their research.  They and I have run into a brick wall!
We would like to identify parents and any siblings.

Following is the link to the NZ WW1 military file for a Robert OLIVER 8/1816.

https://ndhadeliver.natlib.govt.nz/delivery/DeliveryManagerServlet?dps_pid=IE10079691

This record states his date of birth as 3 June 1879, Liverpool.
Nominated NOK as Honora (Nora) Bridget Rodgers [nee McCarthy] - "sister"
Legal NOK - no known relatives
Last employer: Public Works, Clyde, NZ
Single.  Occupation: Labourer
Last NZ address: 72A Dowling Street, Dunedin, NZ
KIA 7 August 1915, Dardanelles

Research undertaken:
Honora Rodgers nee McCarthy does not appear to be his "sister" through either of his parents.
Checked the list of NZ Public Works staff for 1913 and 1914 - negative result
Last NZ address - Robert Oliver may have been boarding at this address?
Electoral rolls - there are a number of "Robert Oliver's" and excluded these due to other family members/place
Found a school record for a Robert Oliver DOB 3 June 1875, parent/guardian Jas Oliver.  Ruled him out as parents James Oliver/Mary McNair
Honora's parents; Henry McCarthy/Margaret McMullen [dau of Alexander McMullen/Mary McGill, County Antrim, Ireland]
Margaret's siblings if correct are; Bridget McMullen marr George Magorian in 1897 [Bridget was a Witness at the marriage of Henry/Margaret in NZ in 1885]; Mary McMullen marr Henry William Nesbitt in 1876
Checked Free UKBMD - no 1879 birth in Liverpool, although in June Q there is one in Manchester.
Checked FreeCenus - couldn't find anything that could be a possibility
Checked Rootsweb passenger lists - arrivals in Otago - negative result
Checked Paperspast
FB message sent to Dunedin RSA to ask if his name appears on any Dunedin/Clyde memorials - no reply yet.  His name appears on the Turkey memorial.
WW1 medals passed down through Honora's family to a family member who has asked "who is Robert Oliver".

Any assistance appreciated.
LEST WE FORGET!

Hi Spades,
I am updating my "Participants at the Battle of Gate Pa [29 April 1864] and Battle of Te Ranga [21 June 1864] and have been looking for soldiers dates of death and places of burial.

While looking for another soldier and not finding his death/burial I started looking at the Auckland Libraries Heritage Collection - digital cemetery records and found this soldier was buried in the Symonds Street cemetery.

When you mentioned that Edmond Andrahan was in the Armed Constabulary I went back to see if I could find him on this list - which is where I found him, and then googled the Opepe Military cemetery and found further information and images.

Spades,
Armed with the info re Armed Constabulary I found his death/burial.  The name on his headstone is that of Edward ANDREHEN.

He died on 7 October 1875 at Opepe and is buried in the Opepe Military cemetery, Bay of Plenty, age 43 years.  This cemetery is located on the Napier-Taupo Road.

Thanks again.

Many thanks Spades for your postings and clarifying OT is Otahuhu not Otago.
Back to the electoral rolls to see what I can find.
I hadn't found the information about him being attested into the Armed Constabulary.
Thanks again
