The Common Room / Re: Missing GRO Death - 1945

If you've contacted the GRO and they won't update their database then you could add a postem to the corresponding FreeBMD entry. Perhaps a brief note for how to find it in the new GRO index and/or an explanation of what was recorded on the certificate.

The discussions pinned to the top of the Common Room includes one on postems and how to use them.

If that's the correct death registration then this could be the corresponding death / burial,

The possible marriage in 1972 was to a Christine M Edmonds. The death of a Christine Mitchell (born 25 Dec 1931) was registered in Leeds in April 1993. The probate index shows a Christine Mitchell of Skelton Cres., Leeds died 8 April 1993.

Without a paid up sub the only other option is that you can send them an invitation to view your tree and include a message. This assumes you can find their username.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: On line Death Register

Another option is to look up the name on www.archway.archives.govt.nz . This includes the index for probate files. Not all deaths required probate but if he's listed you should get full name, occupation, and the year and district in which probate was finalised.

Older probate files, up to about the 1960s, can be viewed at www.familysearch.org/search/collection/1865481

Some NZ cemeteries and councils have put their burial and cremation indexes online. If you know where he died you could Google the local cemetery website.

You could search for the name on Ancestry, FindMyPast and FamilySearch. They have electoral rolls, passenger lists and links to sites such as FindAGrave.

The Common Room / Re: GRO website - Deaths from 1984 to 2019

I notice they have now added BIRTHS from 1984 to 2004.

I'm hoping they bring that forward to the present day like they have with the deaths as it would help a lot with locating current relatives!

Thanks, I hadn't noticed that. They also have births for 1919, i.e. over 100 years ago. I'm sure they previously only went to 1918.

If you have an idea of the year of death it can be useful to also look for a corresponding entry in the probate index as this gives the full date of death and middle names.

Another resource for families in the Glasgow area is the BMD announcements in the Glasgow Herald. This database goes from about 1806 to 1990. Unfortunately it's only searchable by date.

https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=GGgVawPscysC&hl=en

The Gale archive also has the Herald from about 1820 to 1900 and is searchable by keyword. It's available in many libraries. Some libraries may allow you to login from home.
