Dorset Lookup Requests / Peckhams of Parley and Wimborne
« on: Sunday 15 December 13 10:17 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I was surprised to find my maternal great grandfather, William Harman, from Charlwood, Surrey, living with my great aunt Mary Jane Harman in the 1911 census, living in Wimborne Minster. Mary Jane was born in Surrey, as was my grandmother, and married Ernest Peckham from East Parley. The census shows they had four children William, John, Ethel and Edley. I cannot, beyond this record, find anything about the Peckhams and was hoping to find out anything more about them, where the children ended up, etc. Any leads would be greatly appreciated! I now live in Dorset and was very surprised to find this connection so 'close to home.' thanks all!       Aine'

Surrey Completed Look up Requests / Godstone Ashbys
« on: Thursday 29 August 13 17:53 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
My 3x grandfather was Robert Ashby, born in Godstone in 1830/31 to Robert Ashby and Jane Hewett. Robert married "Hannah" who identifies herself in three censuses as being born in 1830 in Coleraine, Ireland, but there is no maiden name mentioned.
At some point, the couple moved to Croydon, Surrey where their children were born.
Oddly, I cannot find a marriage record for the couple anywhere in either locations - or anywhere - and would really like to locate that document as it would contain Hannah's surname and help me trace her, hopefully, in the Irish records, a real boost to tracing that end of the family. I have gone through thesussexweald parish records, too, and find only a few Ashbys which makes me wonder if they were non-conformists, but don't know what impact that would have on the lack of marriage records.
Any help or advice would be most appreciated!! I am hoping someone with more experience than I have at trying to pull the family history together might see a path I'm not seeing! Thank you!

Kent / Morris Boys East and West Langdon
« on: Wednesday 29 February 12 19:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I have just found that, after months of searching, my gggrandfather, Thomas Boys Morris, was born in Strood. His father was born in East Langdon - John Morris - and mother Sarah was born in West Langdon. I cannot find anything about the couple other than the 41 census. I am wondering if  Thomas' mother Sarah's surname was Boys, given the coincidence of that unusual name, the family coming from the Langdons, and the fact that there seem to be a lot of Boys in that area. (Thomas born in 1816/John about 1787/Sarah about 1797)
Does anyone know about the Morris Boys connection?? I am coming up blank beyond the census records of 1841/51, no marriage, birth records (except for Thomas Boys), nothing for the parents.
Thomas Boys Morris became a mariner, married hannah Hickman from Southampton in 1840, and though he died young, assuming that is why he does not live in the family home with his wife - she becomes head of household by 1851 (he died at sea?), his full name shows up on his children's wedding banns (Thomas Boice/Boyce/Boys Morris; master mariner/deceased).
Any information to find the Boys connection that might help me continue to go back and to answer questions about the family origins would be VERY much appreciated!

Pembrokeshire / Morris master mariners of Newport
« on: Friday 10 February 12 17:56 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I have traced my gg and ggg grandfathers to Newport.
Captain Thomas Morris was born in Newport in 1820, his father Richard Morris, also a master mariner, was born in Newport in 1790.
Richard married Mary (who was born in 1776 in Wales) at Ebenezer in Newport. He died in Newport in 1878/She died in 1859 in Newport). They were, i believe, non conformists.

There were two other children who may or may not have been Richard's birth children(given their ages and the big age difference between the couple, it is hard to judge).
They show up living with Richard after Mary's death in the 1861 census (Elizabeth Davies - mariner's wife  and Anne Philips, widow).
The trail goes cold and I have been unable to find anything definitive as far as Richard's family (there are Morris leads in Llandogo, but it is just guessing). Ditto for Mary, the only Mary I can find in 1776 is in Llandowror, Carmarthen, but again, only guesses).
I was hoping there might be other Morris family members who would know just who Richard's (and Mary's ) parents were and anything else about Elizabeth and Anne!
Thomas was a big mystery, but I have found his records and if anyone is interested, I'm very happy to share!

Dorset / Davies of Poole?
« on: Wednesday 08 February 12 18:02 GMT (UK)  »
Hello~!
Mary Davies identifies herself in the 1841 and 51 censuses as having been born in about 1784, Poole. the spelling on both is Davies and in the register of weddings, the original is no where to be found, just the transcript, she is also Mary Davies (as opposed to Davis, etc.).
Mary's husband was from Southampton (Millbrook) - Moses Hickman - and that is where she lived during those censuses.
The Dorset birth records are not very detailed and I cannot pin down a Mary Davies during that time frame, but there are Mary Davis listings.
Davies is a Welsh surname and given the number of time that spelling is used in records, I am wondering if perhaps there is something "mysterious" about her birth?!
Moses was a mariner, Mary and Moses' daughter married a Welsh mariner, and I am wondering if there is a connection and the Davies family might have been a mariner family, only in Poole temporarily (which does not explain the lack of records for Davies in Poole).
I would love to find a family member who knows just who Mary Davies was and her own parentage!

Monmouthshire / Thomas Morris and Richard Morris master mariners of Newport
« on: Wednesday 08 February 12 17:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I have been trying to find more about my gg and ggg grandfathers, both born in Newport Wales.
Thomas Morris was born to Richard Morris and his wife, Mary, about 1821. Richard was a master mariner, as was Thomas.
The big mysteries, beyond trying to go beyond Richard, who was born about 1797 and his wife was born in 1776...too many morris'! include Thomas moved to Southampton, married mariner Moses Hickman's daughter Hannah, but through the censuses, it is clear he left her with two children to support.
Does anyone know these mariners and anything about earlier generations? It would appear they may have come from Llandago, but it is difficult to tell.
Anything would be great!
