Just found out that the Maternity Hospital was converted to being a Presbyterian Manse around 1955.

Thanks maddys52,  Two answers: one is that the Pattersons moved from Stuart Street to Smith Street or Smith Street to Stuart Street.  No.2 is that my lead that the nurses Patterson ran the hospital in Smith Street may be an incorrect lead.  (The name Patterson is included in the Presbyterian Church booklet - but they do no give proof of the information).  Thank you again

thank you Maddys52, Some very helpful information.  All I have been given was a maternity home in SmithStreet, Charlestown. The house/home is still standing and is owned by the Presbyterian Church. They have no records.  From information shared from Trove it can be seen that a number of births were delivered there but it does not give an address.   I was told the nurse was named Paterson but Ihave yet to verify this.  There seems to have been a lot of private maternity homes around the area. This was for all we know could have been in another location and then moved to Smith Street. If it was a person we could look up census!  Do you know of a list recording businesses being registered? Were private hospitals/homes required to register their business with government bodes e.g. medical etc.  Very appreciative of your help.

CaroleW, The time frame would be. around 1955.  I believe three sisters named Patterson worked there.

I am looking for information about a Maternity Home (ordinary house) that was run by I believe two sisters in Smith Street, Charlestown. Was there a local paper that may have reported this place? I would love to know who started it and for how long it ran.  Any suggestions or help would be really appreciated.

Hi Sparrett, Thanks for contribution.  Found a quote from the 1960s the other day which said 'we have to stop cutting down trees and denuding the forest - the only answer is to wrap in the newly popular plastic'.  How things have changed!!!!!

thanks judb, We had a thermos later on but initially it was a billy and loose leaf tea.  I am surprised to see how many complaints made it to the paper about the cost of buying boiling water.  Some shop keepers/ kiosks must have made a good profit at this time.  Thanks for contributing
