Biggles is absolutely right about Familysearch. It's a bad idea to rely on gedcom downloads from there to maintain your tree. You really should consider maintaining your tree locally on your computer.

Sorry to sound patronising - my advice is offered in the spirit of trying to help you to do things a better way.

Well that's something I didn't know.

My grandad was there on the destroyer Owl - Leading Seaman T H Osborne.

Thanks for this.

There was no actual medal for the Battle of Jutland.  However, there was a medallion struck.

Presumably anybody could buy one?

all they ever do is add bells and whistles that somebody in the marketing department has thought up.

I've been a FTM user for over 15 years, and I agree with what Steve3180 says. The only useful thing in the 2019 release was smart filters. The change log is an unnecessary hindrance. In the 2024 release there's nothing of any use. Oh well, I'll stick with FTM2019. No more upgrades for me.

I am under the impression that although civil birth registration started in 1837, it didn't become compulsory by law until 1875. Am I wrong?

Well done to your wife. I hope the refund comes through.

I've never had any contact with MH - and it seems from reading all on this thread that I never will.

I also get unrelated hints. I don't waste my time with hints unless I have particularly difficult problem I'm trying to solve.

World War One / Re: What's the name of the Ship ?
« on: Saturday 20 April 24 11:23 BST (UK)  »
The ship name that appears in brackets is the actual vessel that a man served on. The first name is the depot ship that it was attached to. So it looks to me as if he remained with Sterlochy, which itself moved from Cyclops to Gibraltar.

I'm blown away by your skill and generosity, all of you.

Thanks again
