Family History Beginners Board / Re: Roy Pomeroy, Film Director

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to the above.

Please shellyesq can you give the details of the passenger list for Roy 1908. Ship, departure & arrival  dates and ports. Can you tell whether he was accompanied by brother Arthur. A link that I could follow would suffice.

Here is the story as I deduce it from the above and other info. And its quite a story!

Roy born in Darjeeling, India as Amos, father William Jobbins, colonial civil servant, mother Jeanette Shepherd nee Hauser or Hanser. Father invalided back to Britain but dies at sea in 1896. However,  mother Jeanette Jobbins marries James B. Scalé Oct. 1895 (before Jobbin dies - divorced?). Sometime before 1895 Jeanette and 2 boys must have traveled to England.

Roy (as Amos) and brother Arthur staying with James Scalé (as Scalé) in 1901 census. 1906 Arthur enrolled Clifton College as Arthur Pomeroy, mother Jeanette Pomeroy - leaves Clifton in 1907.

Roy sails to USA (presumably) using name Pomeroy same as his mother, uses name Roy Pomeroy thereafter.

Therefore sometime between 1901 and 1906, Jeanette and the 2 boys assume the name Pomeroy (possibly the name of an ancestor).  Therefore the Pomeroy that I was originally looking for never existed!

If James B Scalé remarried, then presumably Jeanette divorced him before 1914.

This post has been messed up by the moderator.

I am not the author of the post beginning "Looking for someone working on the Pethick family". The original author seems to be lost now.

My post starting "I have been researching the Pomeroy..." was in reply to the first. Can anyone find out who was the original author of the first post so that they can be contacted as requested?

Thanks Monica,
I didn't know about the second wife.
My interest lies with his elder brother, Arthur William Jobbins Pomeroy, also born in India in  1891. Their father was W.H. Jobbins who worked in Calcutta and died between 1894 and 1896, no record can be found. Their mother was Jeanette Shephard Jobbins. I have marriage data and birth records. However, sometime between Jobbins's death and 1906 Jeanette married a Pomeroy. where or when I don't know, and the 2 boya adopted the name Jobbins-Pomeroy, later dropping the Jobbins to an initial J.

Need to know who this Pomeroy was, I believe an American national. I was hoping that some descendent of Roy might be able to fill the gap.

Arthur married a Katherine Pethick in England on 15 Dec 1919. They went to Ghana and later to Jamaica where they had 2 children and Arthur died in 1956. see Pethick thread.

Hi,
I have been researching the Pomeroy line. Katherine Pethick (Pomeroy) and husband Arthur Jobbins Pomeroy moved around a lot. Here is a summary:-
Arthur William Jobbins Pomeroy, born in India in 1891. After education in England and USA he took employment in the Colonial Service as a biologist in Nigeria and the then Gold Coast 1914 - 1931. During the First World War he saw service with the Nigerian Regiment in the Cameroons and in Dar es Salaam. There he was involved in a successful anti-mosquito campaign for which he was awarded a Military MBE. Married Katherine in 1919, and she accompanied him to Ghana. In 1931 he left Africa to live in Jamaica where he ran a market garden until his death in 1956. During WW2 he returned to England where we believe he served with the Royal Engineers, possibly attaining the rank of Major, but we have no confirmation of this.

Katherine had 2 children both born in UK, *, and *. They accompanied her to Ghana and Jamaica, there * married someone called Moseley (no further details) while * ran a Flower Shop and later became involved in a Pomeroy's Department Store, Kingston. Katherine became something of a celebrety, publishing a book on Gardening in the Tropics. She survived her husband and presumably died in Jamaica.
There is a lot more. If you are interested please contact me direct at  (*).  John

Looking for someone working on the Pethick Family.
I'm particularly interested in what happened to Kathleen Annie Pethick, born 1896, mother may have been Annie, father Nicholas Pearse Pethick, Wine Merchant, who may have died in London in 1897. Kathleen married Arthur Pomeroy in 1919 in Chelsea. The family may have originated in Portsmouth. After their marriage Arthur and Kathleen seem to have vanished.
Anyone following this branch of the Pethicks, please get in touch.

Limerick / Balfry family in Limerick & Cork
« on: Thursday 11 August 11 13:17 BST (UK)  »
To all those searching for Balfry (or variants) in Ireland, I have extracted about 120 names and BMD details between 1787 and 1920 from rootsireland.ie. These have been sorted by year.

Most of the records relate to  Cahairconlish, Dunvullen in Co. Limerick, and Doneraile in Co. Cork.

I have posted this list on  http://balfry-roots.wikispaces.com  where you can browse the list and add data of your own. It is by no means a complete record of the many Balfry families - but it is a start.

I hope this will become a community project with everyone helping by adding information.
