on aug 5th 1914 ernest and william west received their mobilisation orders from squadron sgt major cox,both were members of the 1st royal north devon hussars,ernest No 915 and william No 225016,they were two of the five sons of farmer charles and eliza west of scur farm,braunton,sgt major cox asked the brothers if they were prepared to volunteer for service overseas,both men agreed,after a period of training at colchester they sailed for mudros on 25th sept 1915 on board the SS olympic,they arrived at mudros on 1st oct,after a week they reboarded the olympic and sailed for gallipoli,landing at suvla bay on 9th oct,after various tours of duty in the trenches ernest was eventually evacuated with enteric fever,he was taken to sheffield hospital arriving there on 31st dec,he died of sickness on 13th feb 1916,william also had to be evacuated with rheumatism and had to convalesce at whalley hospital,lancashire,after recovering he was assigned to the 1st devons and was killed in the fighting for polderhoek chateau on oct 4th 1917,ernest is buried in st.brannocks churchyard,braunton,william wasnt so fortunate,hes still missing,mack

their parents
charles died on 11th april 1938
eliza died on 19th may 1948
their other brothers were
frederick,charles born 1899
george born 1892
arthur,james born 1897
ernest was born 1894 and william 1890
george married a girl called daisy maud,they had two sons and three daughters,william,ernest born 7th jan 1918,donald,george born 30-8-21,irene,may 13-1-19,sylvia 4-1-24 and betty 22-11-29
fred married elsie edith and had one son,william,john,born 1-2-33
flowers are still laid on ernests grave

Thanks Mack, thats fantastic, I know George married Daisy maud Braun. Had Ernest as dying in 1916, but didn't realise he died in the war.

Just noticed on Alfreds listing it says theatre of war-Home, does that mean he didn't serve overseas yet he died 1916 age 27?????

Mack if you go back to page two of this thread the first question i asked, that Guy answered was Alfred Charles West and William West.

Guys post says Alfreds theatre of war was - Home.
