Pubs in Ware
« on: Friday 03 March 06 20:24 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help.
I am trying to trace a Pub in Ware which had a fire and was destroyed. I think this happened between 1920 and 1930.
My Grandfather Frederick Thomas Down and Grandmother Jane Down were living there with their children Frederick Down and Eva Down.
I think that there were 3 pubs in a row and I have found an address of 6 west Street Ware. but I don't know if this is an address they were rehoused to, or the address of the Pub.
I am trying to trace their movements during this time.
If anyone can give me some advice I would be very grateful.

Thank You Yvonne

Hi Yvonne,
The only pub I can think of in West Street is now called The Old Punch House, but although I dont suppose it was the original name, the address is number 7 West Street, so it could possibly have been next door to the one you are  looking for depending on the street numbering.
I have been told Ware had more pubs than any other town in England so there were obviously a lot more than there are now. Number 5 West Street was once The White Swan Inn so perhaps your pub could have been number 6 in the middle.
           Best wishes,  Linda.

Thanks Linda I think you are right, The pub I am looking for could well have been number 6 West Street,
Have you any Idea  where to look for further information about this, and if this pub was the one which had the fire?

Hi Yvonne,
There seem to be a growing number of RootsChatters interested in Ware so they may have some ideas or be able to help when they see this thread. Otherwise, being a local girl, I can probably find something out for you. I have been visiting Ware chapels and the library to find out various things so I will add the pub to my list if you still dont have the info. Ware museum is very good but staffed by volunteers and only open a couple of days a week, but I know some RootsChatters have e mailed for information.
I will see what I can find out.
           Best wishes  Linda.

Thanks Linda,  I live in the West Midlands so it is difficult to search myself.

How I wish I had asked more as a child, but as all the relatives who would have known are now dead, It's like trying to do a jigsaw puzzle, finding all the pieces,

Thanks again Yvonne

Hi Yvonne,
I believe there was also a Crown and Anchor pub in West Street. I wonder if that could be the one you are looking for! I will see what I can find out. I know its difficult when you live a distance away.
    Bye for now.   Linda.
