I think it's right after the First World War - maybe 1919 -1920

looks like they just all came back from somewhere - after getting the cup!

Maybe they beat Paul E's team in the cap competition ..........  :P :P

I'm going to tell PaulE about you Annie!! ;)

How old do you think the ladylady (holding the cup) is - she is Yvonne's grandmother - so we may be able to date it from that.

Cheers

Keith

Yvonne said she thinks the fire occured between 1920 and 1930 so your date should be very close Annie. Could be a cup for tiddlywinks or dominoes. Could be Pentanque ( is that how you spell it ?). A popular passtime in the Ware district. Probably football.

Very difficult to guess her age. Could be 30 to 40. I have so many pictures of elderly relatives with no teeth who look 105 and turn out to be 30, so I am not a good judge.

I don't think it's football! - looks like they may be a bit old for that!! - but dominoes sounds good - or how about bowls ? or even shuffleboard ?

Perhaps they had just won the " Prettiest Pub In Ware Competition" or got a prize for their hanging baskets!!!!  Its hard to single out a group who look like they might have been the cup winners. They are a very mixed up group. Could be the chaps in the front row, but they dont look like cup winners, or perhaps the younger ones scattered about made up a football team. Did they do 6 a side in thise days? Perhaps we should ask Yvonne if she minds posting this in the common room. That will keep everyone entertained on a saturday night!

Hi Folks,  Yvonne here and I think they have just won the best dressed heads in the village,
Maybe someone can date the caps!!!! then I can try the newspapers for a piece of news about the fire when I know the year!!
If it is about 1920 my Grandmother would have been 38ish My Grandfather is holding the dog,
You are all very helpful,
When the mystery in solved, I am sure someone can find another teaser!

Hi Yvonne,
We have been busy with your photo. If you go onto this site,
www.ware-herts.co.uk/    On the right hand side you can see Tescos, a modern building among all the old ones, and I guess it could be a possibility that that was the site of your pub. It does rather stick out like a sore thumb amongst some lovely old buildings.

Just noticed that Tesocs say they are at 5/6 West Street - so the numbering goes all on one side.
