Hi there Bob.  Sorry, I don't have any McCABE ancestors/descendants in Australia.   Well, not yet anyhow.

And I'm researching the DONAHUE/DONAHOE/DONOHUE all spelling variations in New Zealand only.  Top of Donohue tree is Hugh Donohue who was a free settler in 1893.

What do you mean by "first families" in NZ??

We dont have such things.

There was no ONE place where everyone landed like Sydney.

People arrived in NZ at various locations so each  place has its own "first families".

Waitangi was 1840. Dunedin was 1848.
BURROW, BICKHAM, EVANS, SULLEY, STONE - Devon
STEPHENS, MALLET, ADAMS - Cornwall
HANCOCK , BUSSON - Somerset
MCCALLUM, MCDIARMID, MCNEILL - Argyle, Scotland
WALLS, SUTHERLAND, SIMPSON - Orkney, Scotland
FAIRBAIRN - Fife, Scotland
THOMPSON - Aberdeen, Scotland

Hi Burrow Digger
The unfortunate thing is that the NZSoG encourages people to enter their families as "First Families" as seen on their CD. Someone has entered my family, often incorrectly, and they didn't leave England until 1878!
Cheers
Marlene

I'm not a member of the NZ SOG - never have been.

Since my family did not arrive in Dunedin until the 1860's, and not on the Ship Philipp Laing (I think thats the right name) with William Cargill (who founded Invercargil) in 1848, I know my family is not a "first family."

I've never heard of anyone being from a "first family"  It is very misleading.
I think its wrong. Those families were no better or worse than the families that arrived after them, IMO.  I do not approve of this "eliteism".
I shant be joining the SOG. I'm perfectly capable of finding my family for myself.  And I've done very well so far - as per my website. :)

BD

The first settlers, who arrived in 1848 after a cramped and tortuous passage aboard the John Wickliffe and the Philip Laing, were members of the newly formed Free Church of Scotland which was established after the great split with the Presbyterian Church. They came seeking freedom of worship in a land untouched by religious strife. They were led by two dynamic individuals, the Reverend Thomas Burns, a nephew of the poet, Robert Burns, and William Cargill, of the 74th Highlanders.

Cool, I still remember my history lessons. :)

Maybe I better get my father to buy their CD so I can check for errors as well. :(

Hi there BD and Dale.  I was getting a bit excited thinking someone had replied to my original 'Surname Interests in NZ'.  Oh well.

But after reading your posted messages, I'm sure the original inhabitants of the Land of the Long White Cloud would have been slightly insulted to learn of the mention of 'first families' on a CD Rom in a future time.  But we all know what everyone means by this generally.  That's where I got the phrase from, a little database.  I think from memory my two CD's cost me approx $60, after I became a member!

And like with all genealogical information, it is very time-consuming gathering all of the data and we all appreciate it when and if any errors are found and they can be corrected.

Plus I have quite a few 'first families' ancestors in the State of Victoria, Australia, in the pandora archives.  It's just a phrase.   ;)

Cheers guys, Allycat.
