Census Information Paddick family Completed
« on: Friday 06 October 06 17:26 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for any census information on the Paddick family living in Pontypridd

I have the record from 1901 giving names:

William Paddick age 41
Jane T Paddick age 39
Thomas H Paddick age 14
William J Paddick age 9
Mildred E Paddick age 4

I would be most grateful if someone could give me:
 the address of this family
the occupations of Jane & William

Both Jane & William are showing as having been born in Somerset so i would also be grateful if the 1891 could be checked to see if they were in Pontypridd at that time

Thank you
Warner, Collins, Lingwood, Gilham, Willamant, Denney
Fardoe, Burgess, Sharp, Beardmore, Rye, Taylor, Brice, Pullen, Sayer

Bird, Paddick, Bennett, Dean

Hi Danae,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Their address is 18 Metexa Street at Ystradyfodwg.

William is a Coal Hewer below ground.

Will have a look at 1891 now.

Tanja  :)

As expected - their son Thomas was born in Glamorgan - they are already in Wales in 1891:
RG12/4424 20 35
Ystradyfodwg Middle
3 Hoddenotts Row
(2 rooms occupied)

William Paddick, head, 30, Collier, b. Somerset Long Sutton
Jane, wife, 29, b. Somerset Stathe?
Thos H, son, 4, scholar, b. Glam Treorky

English spoken for everyody.

And - yes, ages are often inaccurate on census returns. However more than 10 years out is a little much, I'd say. Have you checked the complete index, or are you just relying on FreeBMD?

William in 1881, already in Wales:

I was relying on Free BMD - is that not accurate enough?

FreeBMD is not complete! Check out the coverage charts here:

The nearest match I can see in 1871 and 1861 is a William Paddock born Stoke St Gregory (and genuki tells me that Stoke St Gregory includes Stathe, which is the birthplace he names in 1901):

1871
RG10/2369 66 7 & 8
Stoke St Gregory, Somerset
Burrow Road

John Paddock, head, 55, Labourer, b. Isle Abbotts
Elizabeth, wife, 46, Labourer, b. North Curry
George, son, 16, Labourer, b. Stoke St Gregory
William, son, 11, Labouring boy, b. do.
Mary Ann, dau, 7, scholar, b. do.
John Thos, son, 3, scholar, b. do.

Many thanks for your help. I'll have  atrawl through the full index

Was it common for there to be subtle changes in name spellings?

The complete index is free to search here:
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx
(choose Complete BMD Index ranges & Images 1837-1983)

Changes in name spellings - yes, they happen. Tracing John and Elizabeth back, I see they are clearly Paddick in 1851 (but Paddock on the others). I think John also marries as Paddick in 1850.

No William Paddicks born between 1859 and 1861 but I do have a William Paddock born Q4 of 1859 registered in Taunton Somerset.

Do you think I'm safe in assuming that's him?
