Unclear writing
« on: Thursday 19 October 06 17:10 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone. I have just joined Webchat and am hoping that someone more experienced than me can help! I have a copy of a marriage cert. from 1844 but cannot make out the forenames of the two fathers. Without these I cannot go back another generation. I would be very grateful if someone could have a look at the attached cert. and let me know what they think! Many thanks

I think Mr Lent may be Jas. (short for James); the other one could be another abbreviation - how about Rbt, for Robert?

Jas. and Jno get my vote too.
Originally I thought the second one was something like Eli, but no, I think the first letter is the same as the J in Jas. - though to be honest most of his capital letters seem to look the same whatever they are!!!

Not sure I agree that both capitals look the same - the J starts with the loop and the next letter begins at the bottom; the second capital starts at the bottom and seems to loop into the next letter. Richard could be OK?

the J starts with the loop
the second capital starts at the bottom and seems to loop into the next letter

I think he has just started with a bigger loop on the second J !!
Sorry - still go for Jno
