Anthony Fouchard
« on: Friday 26 January 07 14:21 GMT (UK) »
Hi :)
Can you help with this brick wall please.

I have two items in the Dumfries Weekly of Anthony Fouchard starting French classes at Dumfries Academy. One 7 Sep 1824 and one 28 Mar 1826. Are there any records of the Academy Teachers etc available.

Anthony was apparently not born in Scotland. He married Jacobina Tephin (Tophin)  at St Cuthberts Edinburgh 7 May 1813.
His first child Rosellie was born 5 Feb 1816 Edinburgh.
There are 4 more children which i could not find on Scotland People,  Mary c1817,  David c1818,  William c1824,  and  Jemimea c1826 who should all be born in Scotland.

The earliest census at the time was 1861 but none of them in that.

Any information at all that might help with were he came from or were the children were born is greatly appreciated.

Regards
EddieW.

Hmmm, these are tough!

I've searched in 1841 and not had much luck.

What info do you have on them or descendants we could work back on?

There are censu sin 1841 and 1851 but the girls will probably be married by then.  And spelling mistakes make it a difficult name to follow - as you will be aware I'm sure.

We don't give up easily though!

So....

It looks like Jemima was born in England somewhere but not in Lancashire.  Because of the rounding of ages it is hard to estimate when.  She is down as 15 which fits with your 1826 estimate.

The IGI has a couple of connected entries in the NW area.

I don't think the Fouchards stayed in the Dumfriesshire area very long.

I have David and William's families in Liverpool in 1861 so let me know if you want the detail.  In 1871 they seem to move east to Stranton, Durham and Leeds, Yorkshire.  Again, happy to provide detail.

A Jemima Fouchard died in 1st qtr 1861 in Lancashire Liverpool V 8b P 189

Rosalie Fouchard died  in Lancashire Liverpool in the 2nd qtr of 1884 V 8b P 89 age 71.

There are lots of other deaths that will connect.

Hope this helps,
Pam

Thanks Pam
That will certainly be a help.
I did find the 1841 census recently, the trouble was it was transcribed in Ancestry as Fonchard.

Jemima aged 15 in 1841 went on to marry John Vicars and in the 1851 census she was listed as born in Cumberland but i think that was because John was born there.

The other posting you found was before i found the newspaper articles and had no replies from.

Cheers
EddieW :)
