1901 Census Index now on Ancestry
« on: Thursday 05 April 07 10:28 BST (UK) »
:) Full house on the Scottish Censuses. Ancestry have now added 1881 and 1901 to their index databases.

Thanks for the info, Monica. Now all those with Ancestry don't have to ask for SP look ups - or can at least help with look ups  :D

I still like to see the originals though.

I'm finding when I search the later census on ancestry (definitely 1881 & I think 1871) it uses an OR search instead of AND if I don't have a surname.

e.g. I know my surname gets weird transcriptions so I search for William born 1861 Falkland & get every person born 1861 in Falkland. Makes it difficult to find someone without a surname.

Is it me or do others have this problem?

Hi Trish  :D

I take it you meant 1861 (not 1881) and 1871 ?

I do that quite a lot on the E & W census searches but haven't tried for Scotland - I'll go and have a play and see if it's just your invisibility that's causing it!

Added - I get all the William's (whatever surname) born around the particular year

That was quick - I did mean 1881 Scotland - I think it's on there - but knowing how I see things - maybe it's not  ;D

thanks Gadget

I'm searching 1881 for the Dalziel family on the Shetland Is - Mother Helen/Ellen (a widow) would be about 65-67 but could have died. The youngest son was William born 1861. This was them in 1871

1871 Sandsting and Aithsting
Helen Dalziel head 55 Boot Buslders?? wife
Catherine 26
Joan 24
Lawrence 22
Robert 17
Christina 15
Thomas 12
William 10

Ancestry strikes again!

Noticed on the TalkingScot site that people are commenting that Ancestry is calculating birth years for persons in the 1901 census from a wrong base date i.e. from 1891 instead of 1901!

I can't check because I'm not currently an Ancestry subscriber.

But it might be something worth watching out for ...

I'm totally confused - just looked at 1901 Census & the ages relate to 1891 - which is right? - the age or the projected birth date? I assume its the age as this would be taken from the record, but its difficult then to use the index

Steve,

Precisely!

Yet another Ancestry disaster.

The more people who contact Ancestry and advise them of the stuff-up (and/or complain about it), the sooner it's likely to be corrected - which will probably involve just a moment's work to change one date in one programmed algorithm which applies throughout!
