Death at Stirling District Asylum 1887
« on: Monday 30 April 07 16:06 BST (UK) »
My great grandparents Henry and Margaret Field(Morrow) were married in Dumbarton in 1875 and appear in the 1881 census. Margaret Field's age at her time of marriage is given as 24 which gives her a D.O.B. c.1851. Henry and family moved to Belfast c.1887 where they settled. I have been unable to find any record of Margarets death in N.Ireland and must conclude that the death recorded at Stirling District Asylum 6 May 1887 is that of my g.grandmother. The age is given as 37 years which is about right. Why she would have died at this location is something of a mystery,as it is some distance from Dumbarton and not exactly convient to Belfast. Is it possible that hospital records could be found to help identify this lady and help me put the matter to rest ?. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello Albert and welcome to Rootschat :)

I couldn't find much on this from a quick search, but the page linked below

http://web.ukonline.co.uk/members/tom.paterson/places/stat3_larb.htm

shows that the Stirling District Mental Asylum at Larbert served the counties of Stirling, Dunbarton and Clackmannan. So although it was a long way from Dumbarton, it does look as though it would be the facility to which a Dumbarton patient would have been referred.

Hope that helps (a little!)

Hi Albert

Were there no parent's details included on the 1887 death that could help in verifying this Margaret as your g grandmother?

Regards.

The details of the death of Margaret Field in the asylum in Stirling is as follows:

Margaret Field married to Henry Field, May 6th 1887 at 6am.  Stirling District Asylum.  aged 37 (parents details are totally missing) Cause of death was Phthisis (TB)...

I think that the probablility is that it was a name of the hospital at that time...

Hope that helps a little

Best Wishes

Mo

I have 2 old hand written ledgers Stirling District Board of control, Register of Lunatics in Lunatic wards of poorhouses, and Stirling district Lunacy board Minute book of Visiting Committee, the latter starts March 1890, and gives a facinating insight in the day to day life in the Asylum, and the first one gives the name of the patients, both male and female, date of admission, parish of residence, parish of settlement, rate of maintenance, date of discharge or death. and remarks. I think they will be the earliest books you will ever fin about the hospital, the first dates of admissions 1s about 1871 as far as i see,  there are a number of inmates from Dumbarton listed, You are welcome to have a look if its any help, i live in Larbert, thanks.

Hi crudenbayboy,

Is there any chance that your ledgers mention George William Kirton?  He was in the asylum at Larbert some time between 10 April 1894, when he arrived in Glasgow from New York, and 4 May 1894 when he was sent down to Sunderland where he had been born.  He was married to Mary Donaldson Hunter of Alva so presumably had followed her back from the US where they married - he had been in an asylum in Hartford, Connecticut (general paralysis of the insane).  Just not sure how welcoming his in-laws were....

Gatford anywhere

Kirton in Durham
Donaldson, Hunter, Mckenzie in Clackmannanshire/Stirling

Asking a favor for a lookup.  I have found whom I believe was my great grandmother.  I am posting the information that I found at Ancestry.com; however, when I go to the listings for the 1881 Census for the Stirling Poorhouse/Asylum I don't see her name listed.  Can you give me any of the information on her that is contained in your books?  Deeply appreciate the favor if possible.

Sincerely,
Heather Fyfe Fitzgibbon
