Pauline,
Yes, I did read the GRO Site.  My only concern is that it is so hard to find a place around here that would be willing to make the transferrence between the 2 curruncies.
I called my local bank and asked them if they sold IMO.  They didn't.  Perhaps I could find one at a larger city in our state.
My credit and debit cards are indexed to pay only in US dollars.
Pauline, first of all, how much would an unoffical copy cost and  secondly to whom would the the payment be made?

Obviously, I don't know exactly how it would work in the US, but my cards, while issued in Sterling, can be used in other currencies (Mail order and in person while outside the UK) without problems.

For example, I could order a $10 book, and $10 dollars would appear on my statement, together with the exchange rate used to convert that amount into Sterling charged to the card.

There would appear to be a couple of sites offering this order-a-certificate service. I have not used any of them.  Anything more than a charge of 11 or 12 pounds is a rip-off. The certificates are currently 8? pounds to buy. One site I saw wanted 25 pounds a certificate, but I didn't post that URL.

It seems to me that if Aaron looked on FBMD then probably none if the references he gives are the right one. Not if you actually have the birth date as Aug 13 1865! If look at the coverage charts for FBMD they only have about 65% of the data for 1865 in the database so far.
You can check online at
http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/
It costs something to use it and you can order the certificates through them.
Alternatively, I have used the following site
and he will take cheques in dollars though obviously it will slow the process down as it will involve posting it. He will search the GRO for a small charge if you are not sure of the dates. I got very good service from him.
I don't understand why he is not in the 1881 census (I think the one given before is clearly the one born in 1860 at Caistor and a very poor fit if yours was born in 1865). There is however one born 1866 at Doncaster which is not far from the Lincoln border AND his parents both give their birthplaces as Lincoln. Or he could just be missing as my gtgrandfather is even though I know pretty much where he was at the time.
Apologies for jumping in here, I just think you should be cautious. If you are certain of the birth date I would try the certificate site I gave you. If not try either them of the 1837 one. Good luck!

It's back to a recurring problem for non-UK researchers.

1837 directs you to the GRO site to order your certificate online. And that service is for UK-based orders ONLY. Nice try though; also a good point about Freebmd coverage. It's easy to forget.

Sorry I havn't used 1837 myself so didn't realise that.
Also, it would hsv ehelped if I had put the link to the other site which is specifically for people who live overseas and not for UK-residants.

Hi
Can I suggest the following, obtain the Ref.no. from 1837.online and then telephone the office below, give them the details plus accepted credit card details, they will then post it to you.

General Register Office
PO Box 2
Southport
Merseyside
PR8 2JD

Tel 0870 243 7788 or (international) +44 870 243 7788

If you cannot afford or do not wish to purchase units on 1837.online site, let me know the full name and birth date plus where you expect to find him (county) and ask nicely and I will get it for you.

Hi all,
The 2 facts I know:  He was born in Lincolnshire on Aug. 13, !865.  Also, I ran off on the internet a 1930 census record for a township back in my home county.  On the census record for 1930, he is listed as 65.
Oh yes, I also know he died in North Dakota in 1952.  Doing simple math he would have died at about the age of 87 which is exactly right.

Hi
I have checked the 1837.online records and there are no Edward Rutters born Lincs in 1865.
The most likely one would be the one that was found in Doncaster 1866 quarter 1 9c 530.

good luck
