The only thing we have to go on, is a old family photograph which on the reverse says maud, my wife can only vaguely remember her gran, she was widowed when my wifes grandfather died, and she married someone named chilcott in south wales, cardiff area   glen

I cannot ask any relatives her actual birthdate, all we know is that she was born in 1882, her name was maude adelade, but i am wondering about maud alexandra fryer born wandsworth 1d page 723, the main thing what baffles me is in the 1901 census Richard was 70 years old, and his wife died in 1877(frances Amelia). why did it put maud as his daughter, i find this a bit sinister for him to be a father at 61 with no known wife? any ideas    glen

Firstly - I wouldn't be too concerned about the designation daughter on the 1901 census - that is most probably an error on the original sheet.

Secondly, I think perhaps the way to sort this best would be to obtain the marriage certificate for Maud  -  this should give her father's name, if known.

There is a marriage in 1922 in Wales for a Maud A Fryer to a David H Jones.

I realise that we are approaching the realm of living relations  :-\   Does this marriage sound like the correct one ?  was your wife's parent Jones ?

1901 census maud (and Muriel) are listed as GRANDdaughters of Richard
maud (and Muriel) were the daughter's of Alexander (Richard's son)

thanks for the help, maud lived in glamorgan, and i know she married three times her first marriage was possibly to a jones, becuase her mother had a step sister who was named jones before her marriage, then she maud married arthur Bateman sorryno dates, he died in 1944, then later in life she married a chilcott, it is so frustrating as my wifes mother and most of her family all passed away in the last ten years,     glen

How are you so certain Richard fryer is part of your family ???

You state that all you know is gran was Maud Adelaide Fryer b 1882

yet you sent for a certificate maude Adelaide Fryer???

Now you are wondering about Maud Alexander????

Are you not sure about Adelaide as a middle name?

Do you have maud and grandfather's marriage cert ?
That will give you maude's father's name (or no name if she was illegit)

When was their eldest child born???

There are these children who were possibly born to Maud A Fryer and david H Jones
Sept qtr 1923
bridgend
Gwladys J Jones
mothers maiden name Fryer
11a 1710

Sept qtr 1925
Bridgend
Donald S Jones
mother's maiden name fryer
11a 1645

Hope we can help you to sort this out
