« on: Saturday 17 January 09 18:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,

my ancstry sub is only for UK and only today did I find out my family branched out into Canada!

The ancestry passenger lists appear to list my people.destination port Quebec

Can anyone please check and give details?

The family is :

SIMONS

Richard   born about 1827
Louisa (his wife , ie Mrs ) born c 1837

Children,all born between 1864 and 1881,eldest first.

Andrew c 1866
Rose     c  1869
Philippa....invariably misspelled, the one on the passenger list is spelled PHILIPA c 1870
Newton  ?? c 1872
Lilian Matilda c 1873
Alfred c 1875
Fred L c 1880

The family is all born in Norfolk,Methwold apart from father Richard, in Feltwell.
In 1881 they were still in England but in 1891 no more.

Grateful for any help
Rebel

There are 2 references for Simons but neither include names of families - I was told that it wasn't until the 1900's that they began listing everyone on board.

Richard Simons b. 1833, 49, on board the Parisian Date of Arrival, 4 Nov 1882 Liverpool to Quebec
Mr. R. Simons Date of Arrival Quebec from Liverpool 21 Sep 1890 on board the Polynesian

The family is on the 1891 Canadian Census in Hamilton Ontario
Louisa Simons, 54, Widow
Newton, 19, Bricklayer App
Lilian, 17, Apprentice ? - can't read it
alfred 16
Fred, 10
Jessie, 8 - I can check for a birth later
Ernest W., 23, Bricklayer

I did a quick search for Richard's death but couldn't find it - will check again

Andrew is married and living in Toronto, Ont.
Andrew, 24, labourer
Emma, 20
George, 5 1/2

You can track them in the 1901 and 1911 census by following this link.

Hello Debbie ,
thankyou for this information.

I´ve been searching via ancstry ,trying to narrow things down.

The passenger lists show a PHILIPA SIMONS born 1870 travelling 1885 to Quebec. This seems to fit ..could you check the details please? Perhaps the family didn´t all travel at once ?

What do you recommmend as  the best place to access BMDs for Canada online?
Are the records at Ancestry complete?
My interest in Canada (genealogically speaking only!!) is probably limited so I don´t really want to upgrade my subscription.

thanks for your help
Rebel

Death Registration for Louisa Simons #039262
Date of Death 21 Sep 1929 at 120 Breadalbane St. Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario
She was 87 years old, a widow, born March 8, 1842 England
Father William Fuller  Mother Sarah Wortley - both of England
Burial Hamilton Cemetery 24 Sept 1929
cause of death arterio schlerosis and myocardial failure
Informant Mrs. A.B. Smith of above address (daughter)

Will check to see who married Smith although on the marriage record below for Andrew one of the witnesses is Lillie Anderson - I'm assuming his married sister.

Marriage #014102
Andrew Fuller Simons of 484 Lawrence St. Toronto b. 1865 Methwolds, Norfolk age 24 - labourer
Father Richard Simons  Mother Louisa Fuller
Emma Blashell Dunn of Toronto b. 1870 Toronto, Ontario age 19
Father Jonathan Dunn  Mother Phoebe McClure
married 24 December 1889 at 335 Berkley St. Toronto, York County
witnesses:  John boyd and Lillie Anderson

I don't know of any easily accessible site for Ontario records except for ancestry.  There could be some good local sites that I am not aware of but the Ontario government doesn't have an online searchable data base like BC has.  I will do some checking for you and see what I can find.

Debbie

Looking for Lilian's wedding I found the marriage of Andrew's daughter

Lillie Evelyn Simons, 17, Methodist, with father Andrew Fuller Simons - drain contractor and mother Emma Blashel Dunn married  Registration #020401 by licence
Alexander Skene, 21, bachelor, driver, Presbyterian, with father Alexander Johnston Skene - cartage agent and mother margaret Donoghue
22 May 1911 Toronto, Ontario  Witnesses Andrew F. Simons and Eva H. Fairchild of Toronto.  Marriage performed by G.S. Fairchild of Toronto.

Marriage #013620 under Lillias Simmons
age 22, b. 1873 with parents of Richard and Louisa Simmons
married 21 Nov 1895 at Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ont.
Frank Adams, 22, b. 1873 Dundas (probably Ont.) - cotton worker  Parents Thomas and Margaret Adams
witnesses Nellie Burden Dundas and Richard Kells - Hamilton

Coincidentally there is a marriage record for Richard Kells 14 Jun 1899 Toronto, York County.  He married Lillie Simons b. 1876 Eastcot, daughter of Matthew Simons and Mary Lighton  - Did Richard have a brother that emigrated to Canada as well?

Unless Frank dies and Lillie remarries she is not the witness for Andrew's marriage.

The person Louisa was living with at her death was her married daughter Jessie Olive Simons b. 1883 Norfolk, England.

Marriage #021204
married by licence 5 Sept 1906 at Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario
Age 23, parents given as Richard Simons and Louisa Fuller
Alfred Bertram Smith, 24, B. 1882 Hamilton - casket trimmer   parents charles Smith and Mary Ann Harper Smith
Witnesses: John Henry Markle and Edith Smith of Hamilton

Haven't found anything on Phillipa as of yet.  If you trace these families in the 1901 and 1911 Canadian census and give me names of children I can look for their births and ancestry has deaths until 1934 and marriages until 1924.
