COMPLETE - U.S.D. on certificates - THANKS NELL

I have several BMD certificates with the initials U.S.D. or U.D. in the place of birth or death column.
I also  have certificates with Union on them.

I would be very grateful if anyone could tell what they mean.

USD = Urban Sanitary District

Sorry, forgot the 'Union' part.  That is the workhouse.  Workhouses covered for a number of parishes and these areas were were known as Poor Law Unions.  The union workhouse and infirmary often became the hospital in the 20th century.
