« on: Tuesday 14 July 09 14:02 BST (UK) »

A place by that name appears on a google search. To confirm the exact place, you could take note of the addresses of the neighbours on the 1841 census. You should eventually come across a landmark that still exists today. Then you can compare both modern and old maps of the area to try to narrow down the place where your ancestor's lived.

Hi Ruskie...thanks for taking the time to respond....all the household entries on that page are for Church End in 1841..the only other address for 1851 was Yawling Gate...or similar.

Carol, Have you tried going further, onto the following pages and the previous pages? When looking for locations it can be useful to go several pages both ways, at least until you hit a road or other landmark.
(If you give me the names and 1841 reference I'll try to give you some help.  ;))

Just having a quick look at google maps, and there's not much new development in the area.  There are some roads that sound like they might have been there in 1841 like Low Gate, Smithy Lane, Church Lane, and the one you found Yawling Gate Road. The main road is Church Road which turns into the Avenue. I wonder if this was Church End.

Compare a map of today with a map from oldmaps.co.uk .... not much change. ;)

Google maps indicte Church End was a couple of houses up from the church, about half way between Church Lane and Smithy Lane on the same side of the road as the church. But google maps often get locations a bit wrong.

Are you near enough to visit Friskney? If so, I'll bet one of the old locals or someone from the church will be able to point you in the right direction.

There look to be a few new houses and some warehouses in the village, but you should get a good idea of how it would have been when your ancestors lived there. Good luck.  :D

That's so helpful and worth knowing...so many of the ancestral homes are either retail outlets or service stations :-\ :-\
I live about forty minutes away...so not impossible...and there may be Bucknall graves in the church grounds...thanks so much for your help ;)

If you get a piccy or two can you post them on here? it looks like a nice little village.

The reason this post caught my eye is that some of my partner's ancestors lived in Friskney at some stage (bit rusty on the details as I haven't researached them for a while).
