Newspaper Reports 1870 *COMPLETED*
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 04:22 BST (UK) »
Hi,

In the Wellington Independent, Volume XXIV, Issue 2991, 10 May 1870, Page 2
there is a report of the sinking of a schooner.

"The Brixham schooner Courser, in ballast, was wrecked on Sunday morning, near the entrance to Dartmouth harbor. It would seem that the schooner had encountered a severe gale throughout Saturday night, and at an early hour on Sunday morning she was noticed by several persons from Dartmouth Castle, some distance off, carrying a flag of distress, laboring heavily, and apparently unmanageable."

I am hoping someone could please tell me the approx time period one would expect news such of this to reach NZ after the event, I suspect it would have been reported in Australia first and then picked up by our tabloids.

I have endeavoured to find the report of a wreck in England and also the death of the Master who was Capt Brusey, and obviously I am getting no where.  So a time period may help me cast my net a bit further to see if I can find them, it will also help me understand other such reportings in our Newspapers of the day.

Many thanks

Wonderful thank you - the article talks about the dreadful extreme weather of Feb 17th 1870, and also about inquests into deaths - I feel I am getting somewhere now.

Thank you so much.

Pleasure! :*)

Here is another more relevant article from England:
"The schooner Courser, of Brixham, ran ashore on the rocks near Dartmouth Castle at seven o'clock on Sunday morning. The crew of six men took to their boat. A pilot boat put off to their assistance. The schooner's boat capsized before help could be rendered. The captain and four men were drowned. One man swam ashore. The vessel shortly afterwards went to pieces."
- The Bradford Observer (Bradford, England), Monday, February 14, 1870; pg. 3

There are a few more I've not yet looked at -- is there a particular thing you're trying to work out?

Thank you again, I have a deep altho very frustrating interest in the Brusey Family originally Brixham later some went to Lincs and Yorkshire.  All where mariners.

Most of the men seemed to marry a girl from Brixham and just loved to repeat christian names mainly William, Isaac and Sarah's.  There is one in particular I have lost altho he appears to be on the 1871 census, but we all know that things can be doubled up at times particularly if the gentleman in question was actually at sea, and has a cousin by the same name.  I am not optimistic but I am sort of hoping this Capt Brusey is William Howard Brusey born 1848 in Brixham.

This link will take you to my problem lol

Ah, juicy puzzle you have there! :*)

Am wondering if the Courser master might have been a Thomas, after seeing this webpage -- (http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/o/Anne-Scott-2/WEBSITE-0001/UHP-0248.html)

Will have a quick scout round and see if I can find something else for you.
