Thanks once again for all the info. A kind rootschatter has already contacted me regarding probate for Gilbert and Nora and are emailing me the details.
Two of Daniel and Guida's daughters who stayed in England were nurses in the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Nursing Reserve. Lesley married Henry Allison a chemist in 1921 that's the certificate that has Daniel as a retired draper. Winifred married Wilfred Nevill Brown-Constable in India in 1922. The Brown-Constables were mostly military and clergy, Wilfred ended up teaching at Eton College.
Wish I could search the records myself, perhaps a holiday in new Zealand! Maybe Daniel is proving the rebel of the family, there's always one!

Hi Wint,
We don't mind finding records etc for you, just ask and if we can help we will.

I notice an entry at archives for I presume Nora

 Civil Nursing Reserve - 3-11 May 1944 - Sandbrook, N

and also
Miss Ruby Sandbrook - New Zealand Voluntary Aid Detachment 1922

They are both at Wellington Archives, the one for Nora has restricted access the other is open

These little snippetts help show who the person was.

Cheers Janette

Thanks Janette, any information or records are greatfully received. I did notice the reference to Ruby Sandbrook on Archway, like you say it builds a picture of the person. I'm still trying to picture poor Daniel as a Roadman at 70! I think he must have done something to upset his family!!

Well, well the plot thickens. Thanks to the kindness of kiwi-terrier I now have the probate records for Nora and Gilbert Sandbrook. Their sister Ruby had five children and Gilbert had one daughter. It was noted in Nora's papers that her parents were both deceased and they had five other children other than the deceased, there were actually 12 children albeit most died during infancy. It mentioned Winifred Sandbrook who had married but whose married name was unknown and she had a son Peter, both were deceased. As far as I know she never had children. It mentions the eldest sister Lesley who apparently never married and didn't have any children. I have the marriage certificate for Lesley who married in 1921 to a Henry John Allison and they had a son Gordon Allison, both sisters were nurses. Not a lot of communication in the family methinks. On Winifred's nursing records April 1920 it gives her Mother Guida as next of kin and the King Edward's Parade Devonport address - no mention of Daniel and he was still alive. What of Guida? Obviously she didn't leave any probate papers.

Hi Wint,
I drove past 55 Rautara St today and it is definitely a former state house,it would have been built between 1935 and 1940,so I imagine either Guida or Gilbert would have been the first tenants in the house, state houses were built to house those who couldn't afford to buy their own homes.
King Edward Parade in Devonport was on the waterfront.

Cheers Janette

Thanks, in 1926 Guida was living at 25 Clarence Street Devonport. She outlived Daniel by 25 years so must have been difficult for her. It's a
wonder she lived to that age having given birth to 12 children! Gilbert Sandbrook was married to a lady called Cecilia and was living at 19 Belmont Terrace Auckland in the 1960's. He left his estate to his natural daughter but she wasn't called Sandbrook-interesting!
