I dont think Ellen Smith was Thomas Maxey's cousin after all as she wasn't Elizabeth Smith's daughter - she was her step daughter.

Elizabeth Maxey married Robert Smith in 1855.

In the 1861 census RG 9/2381/107/19

Robert Smith  57
Elizabeth Smith 49
Benjamin Smith son 14
Robert Smith son 10
John Smith son 4
Ellen Smith daughter 18

So the only one of these children who were Elizabeths and Roberts was John, the rest were step children.

Emily Maxey Smith was born in 1867, Elizabeth would have been 55 years old.....surely she would be too old ???

I think Emily Maxey Smith is Ellen Smith and Thomas Maxey's daughter. She was staying with her step grandmother Elizabeth Smith, who was also Thomas Maxey's aunt in 1871.  ;D ;D ;D

Hi Jan

First of all thank you very much for all the work you have already done. After a nights sleep and drawing out the relationships it is a little clearer.... well lets just say not as confusing ::)

I have found that Robert Smiths father was Benjamin Smith ( marriage of Robert & Elizabeth Maxey)  but the possibly first marriage I found for Robert Smith/ Emily Eve he names his father as John, so I don't think it is him.

Hi again

Found Robert in 1851  - he was married to Frances, so she is Ellen's mother

HO 107/2111/288/7  Broad bank, Louth

Robert Smith 47  Joiner     Balderton Notts
Frances Smith 37              Tathwell Lincs
Ellen Smith 7                     Tathwell
Benjamin Smith 3              Louth
Mary Smith 13  niece         Newark Notts

There are, according to Freebmd 4 deaths of a Frances Smith in Louth between 1851 and 1855 (when Robert remarried) Two in 1851, one in 1853 and on in 1855. The last is unlikely. I'd hedge a bet on it being one of the 1852 ones, possibly after the birth of Robert who was 10 in 1861.
