And even more puzzling

Elizabeth Smith  60  Parish relief and laundress
Thomas Maxey  24  Nephew   joiner

So were Thomas and Ellen cousins?

So is this the 1871 census?

I'm not sure about actually marrying as there are no Thomas Maxey marriages between 1881 and 1891, so perhaps she just took his name.

This might be a connection

Thomas Maxey  head widow 41  Master joiner
William Maxey son  14
THOMAS  MAXEY son 7

Yes I think you are right as I can't find a marriage either...so 7 year old Thomas is Elizabeth Smith nee Maxey nephew...which matches the later census...........wow there are lots of visiting going on in this family at census times

I wonder who Fred Maxley's mother is as in 1881 Thomas says he is unmarried, but Fred is his son.

There is the birth of a Fred Maxey Smith Dec quarter 1873 Louth 7a 591, so it looks as if his mother was Ellen Smith. Interesting family this one.  ;D ;D ;D

You are not kidding ;D

It is my grandfathers elder sister husband, I knew all my great aunts and uncles except this one so started researching as Maxey Osbourne's daughter( who I remember visiting) went to live in Northern Ireland........and I researched the line back and I have crossed the Atlantic going back several times back and forth, then decided to come back to Maxey and now all this...it makes my direct line look tame ;D

That's often the way isn't it, it is the side shoots that are more interesting.
