Is the child a girl or a boy? I originally thought a girl but she/he has short hair. Maybe a younger verson of the young boy in the photograph posted above (1st link)?

I found Thomas Donovan Photographer and there's a photo of the same photo backing as above on this page here, said to have been used from 1890:-

My guess would be a boy.

Another vote for a boy. 

He could very well be the boy in your first post - there is a similarity.

Thanks for putting up the back as this says more than the front.
The seated artist by Marion Imp Paris was a design registered in 1892.The Reg. No. 41062 is in the bottom right hand side of the card & on the left hand side is the date code.Although MIP date codes aren't an exact science this one appears to give the date of 1899.

Well Jim, yours eyes are a whole lot better than mine! I had to get out the magnifying glass to read those small words. I'm not even sure now I can read it, it looks like 12 after the words Marion Imp Paris and the number on the right does look like 41062 but I would never have picked it if you hadn't told me what it was. Thanks so much for your help.

Thanks to everyone else, looks like the consensus is he's a boy! I did find that site thanks Sylvia, it was linked to the one I posted.

Oh I see, thank you. I've rescanned it and see that it isn't a 12 after all but it certainly looks like something, perhaps a Q?
