Mooi River Boer War graves

Hello,

I have been researching my family tree and I have found that my great grandfather died from wounds received at Spion Kop during the Boer War and was later buried at Mooi River, Natal.  His name was L. Corp or Pvt. William Beckford (3431).  He received his wounds on 24 Jan 1900 but died on 3 Feb 1900.  Is there any chance that anyone has photographs of this burial site or whether anyone in the locality could take a photograph of his gravestone, if it exists.  It's a long shot I know, but you never know until you try.

The Lancashire Fusiliers suffered heavy losses at Spion Kop and the fallen were buried in two length lines of shallow graves,there is however a memorial erected to the fallen at Spion Kop.

Thanks very much for providing this photograph.  I can see my great great uncle listed on it, which is really nice to actually see it.  Very sad though.  thanks for taking the time to upload this photo.  It is much appreciated.

Keith, I went up to Mooi River 2 years back looking for the grave of a family member of a Candian Rootschatter. Unfortunately I dont live in SA anymore so I cant go back. I will look through the photos I took and see if there is anything that may interest you. I think if there is a memorial stone there wont also be a grave. I could be wrong on this though.

My grandmother was a nurse at No 4 General Hospital at Mooi River for two years from mid February 1900, so she arrived just after your great grandfather died. You might be interested to read more about the hospitals and nursing, you will find letters from some of the nurses in the articles below

Both the Australian and New Zealand National Libraries have digitised many historic newspapers and searching is absolutely free
