I k ow this is an old post but I have been researching my family tree. You say your niece’s grandfather was Richard Cherrington. If it is the same Richard, my grandfather was his brother Robert who also joined the Highlanders in Ceylon. He came to Edinburgh and married my granny. He died in October 1945. I never knew him but have some copies of his papers from one of my uncles (who was also a Cherrington). Have you got any further forward your search? I live in Scotland also
