THOMAS HULBERT HOFFMAN VICTORIA PARK PERTH WESTERN AUSTRALIA died 1903

The voyage of the Orient prior to the one in December 1889 (which HULBERT and WHARMBY arrived on) came into Melbourne in August and onboard was a Thomas HOFFMAN, aged 36, Single male, Hairdresser, and Alfred HULBERT, aged 20, Single male, Draper (?)  They are not listed consecutively, there is another passenger in between.  They are both contracted to land in Sydney.

On a second list, they are recorded together, have consecutive ticket numbers and their names are crossed out.  This time Alfred is 'ditto' for the occupation of Hairdresser.

When they arrived in Sydney,  Thomas is now a Watchmaker and Alfred a Clerk!!

I think this is more a case of poor record keeping/transcribing from one manifest to another than anything.  It always makes me wonder how they managed to account for their passengers if the ship was lost.

OK, I think I have it 

Naughty Thomas was actually Thomas HULBERT and was already masquerading as HOFFMAN when he left England.  I would say that Harry/Henry and Alfred were related but I haven't checked yet.  Looks like they were doing a runner and Harry acted as escort for Mary Ann (or have I been watching too much TV)
