Romilly, I presume you have the Church itself? If so, you seem to have covered all possibilities. I can’t think of anything else to suggest.

Yes Jebber,

It’s St Wilfred’s RC Church, Hulme. Unfortunately the Church was deconsecrated and closed in 1990. There’s some uncertainty about where the original records are held.

Thanks Sandie, yes they’re at the Lancashire Archives.

I’ve emailed them about it, and I’ve tried searching on Lancat, the search engine on there, but got nil results.

Hopefully they’ll get back to me in the week.

I’ve had a reply from Manchester Registry Office saying that the original Certificate will be held by Manchester Central Library Archives and that I’d need to pay another £11.00 to order the Marriage Certificate from them…

The problem is that there’s no guarantee that I wouldn’t just get sent another identical copy of the certificate that I already have!

Really unsure how to proceed with this…?

Romilly.

If you contact the Library Archives you need to stress that you need to compare the signatures, so only a photocopy or photographic image of the original  certificate would do. If they can supply that all well and good, otherwise there would be no point in paying out again.

In this day and age it should be quite easy to photograph the original without risk to the book. I have taken perfectly good clear images of documents with my mobile.

Many thanks for your helpful reply Jebber, much appreciated.

Manchester Central Library is a difficult Site to contact directly, I’ve been going round in circles on it:-(

I might resort to sending them a written letter explaining what I need, because there doesn’t seem to be any way of explaining on the standard forms that you get directed to.

Good luck Romilly, I know how frustrating it can be when firms don’t provide a  convenient way of expressing one’s requirements. I have gone round in circles at times trying to explain what I want or need to know with different companies. So much for progress! ::)

Many thanks Jebber,

I’ve fired off lots of enquiries, and will post again if I get anywhere.

What I want to avoid above all is getting another copy of the same Marriage Certificate! (And paying £22 for the privilege;-)
